Voting Results

Votes to determine the implementation of v.2.4 network upgrade as approved by the concerned community members on July 17 were concluded on Tuesday with 98.22% “YES” votes and 1.78% “NO” votes.

The majority of votes in support of the network enhancement implementation came from the Setten Validator (2.7%) and Smart Stake Analytics Hub (2.29%). However, the Kucoin Luna Node and 70 other validators exempted themselves from voting on the on-chain proposal.

What Does Terra (LUNA) Hope To Achieve With Upgrade 

The main idea behind the just-concluded update is to push for the adoption of LUNA, the dedicated token of the Terra blockchain. Per a previously drafted outline by Terra’s development team, the upgrade will integrate and tackle four impediments known to limit activities on the Terra blockchain.

One such limitation that got resolved following the successful upgrade implementation is the issue of Smart Contracts not triggering as expected.

In addition, undelegation problems witnessed by some Terra blockchain users got resolved. At the same time, a crucial issue related to message validation got fixed too.

Terra (LUNA) Moves For Inter Blockchain Communication (IBC)

Per new findings, a group of developers submitted a Terra enhancement proposal for governance voting on Monday. The new proposal was tagged “Gate Contract,” which aims at promoting inter Blockchain Communication (IBC) messages between Terra (LUNA) and other smart contracts running on different chains.

It is worth noting that Terra (LUNA) blockchain can not merge with Terra Classic (LUNC) blockchain as both blockchains are known to be certified independent blockchains; Terraform Labs staff, Jared, made this disclosure via an old tweet.

The network has made new headway towards realizing this goal as the L1 Joint Task Force (L1JTF) took the next step towards the implementation of v2.1.0 known as the Cosmwasm upgrade.

It should be noted that this upgrade is meant to bring Terra Classic (LUNC) to parity with Luna 2.0 and Cosmos blockchain.

The revision of the second quarter roadmap recently released shows that the L1 team has shifted the date of the upgrade to version v2.1.0.

According to LuncBurnArmy in a series of tweets a few hours ago, the release date has been moved from May 31 to June 14 to give room for more tests on the upgrade and quality assurance.

In the same thread of tweets, LuncBurnArmy (LBA), the L1JTF’s Project Manager revealed that once the testnet is successfully released on May 31, the upgrade proposal will be created and put up for voting after seven days.

LuncBurnArmy noted:

“The team is focused on the v2.1.0 upgrade, and smart contract testing has been going well. The rehearsal testnet upgrade has been scheduled for this Wednesday May 31st at approximately 11am EST.

“Following a successful upgrade on the testnet on Wednesday May 31st, we will be creating and posting the upgrade proposal, and will put it up for vote approximately 7 days later. The upgrade for parity has been scheduled for June 14th as a firm date.

“The 5% minimum validator commission fee has been developed, is currently undergoing testing, and we are targeting inclusion in v2.1.0 on June 14th.

Another key aspect of the upgrade is determining the validator fee rate. Although validators on the Terra Classic network have the freedom to set their choice validator fee, the team wants to enforce a minimum commission rate of 5% to ensure a fair and secure network.

Jared of TFL noted specifically that LUNC along with Osmosis, Juno, SEI, Carbon, and a bonus chain has been integrated into the Station repo. The developer added that Interchain support for Terra Classic will be launched on December 12.

This compatibility update between LUNC and the impending Interchain Station has sparked much interest from the Terra Classic community. This is so because Jared said earlier that Terra Classic will not be compatible with the Interchain Station except the project modifies its prefix. 

The TFL developer further encouraged the Terra Classic community to strive to attain independence from TerraForm Labs’ infrastructure, highlighting the associated advantages and benefits to LUNC. More so, Jared added that the TFL is willing to exit direct support for the Terra Classic chain when it becomes fully independent of TFL’s infrastructure. 

So this update from the liaison man between TFL and the LUNC community comes at a time when the Terra Classic developer group, Terra Rebels, abandoned TFL’s infrastructure to develop an independent LUNC wallet dubbed Rebel Station. 

To build Rebel Station, the independent LUNC dev group Terra Rebels submitted a controversial proposal that passed and they eventually received a funding sum of $150,000.

The last update regarding Rebel Station from the TR group was on December 20. Since no further updates have been received from the group, coupled with the perceived misappropriation of the allocated funds, LUNC community members demanded a refund of the $150,000 from Terra Rebels, which has not been done. More so, the TR scam allegations negatively impacted Binance’s LUNC burn support.

Recall that LUNA was birthed shortly after the historic collapse of the Terra ecosystem which was caused by the de-pegging of the algorithmic stablecoin, formerly known as TerraUSD (UST), as designed by Do Kwon. 

Ever since LUNA spiked to an all-time high of $19.54 on May 28, the token has been in a steady decline, establishing an all-time low of $1.17 in December 2022. With over 93% decline from its all-time high, roughly 43% decline in the last 90 days, and an 18% fall in the last 30 days at press time, interest in the token continues to lessen by the day.

At the time of writing, LUNA’s price is exchanging hands at $1.33, having plummeted by over 2% in the last 24 hours. While it’s not certain the trend it will maintain in 2023, some technical indicators indicate that LUNA’s price could easily go either way in the short term. 

Particularly, its relative strength index (purple) dropped below 60 today after reaching 70 earlier this year. Also, LUNA’s moving average (red) for the 30 days range continues to hover around its 200-day average (blue). 

Considering that no algorithmic stablecoin powers the Terra 2.0 blockchain coupled with the lack of significant use cases related to the coin, the possibility of LUNA rallying to the $100 mark or anywhere close appears slim but not impossible.

Should there be notable improvements around the blockchain project which is not similar to the shunned proposal to create a mutual alliance between Terra Classic (LUNC) and Terra (LUNA), massive adoption of LUNA could come from crypto investors. This and many other positive outcomes could in turn trigger a considerable price rally for the community-led asset in the foreseeable future.

What Does 1.2% Tax/Burn Represent In LUNC Burn Initiative?

After the collapse of the Terra ecosystem, which led to the crash of Terra (LUNA), a new chain was created, and the old chain token was renamed Terra Classic (LUNC).

Prior to the emergence of the new Terra blockchain dubbed Terra 2.0, a large number of community members clamored for a massive burn of LUNA tokens. Even the CEO of Binance exchange, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), advised Do Kwon and his team to opt for LUNA massive burn. CZ believed that the creation of a new chain will not help the price, but Do Kwon’s mind was already made up.

The launch of Terra 2.0 produced a new token codenamed LUNA 2.0. Some members of the community were airdropped, while a ton of others chose to hold their LUNC, believing that Terra Classic still can be revived through a token burn mechanism.

A few days after the new token was launched, the determination of those who believed in LUNC gave birth to a new burn proposal that suggested a frank LUNC burning mechanism.

According to the content of the proposal, a 1.2% tax/burn will be implemented on all LUNC transactions (buys and sells). This implies that 1.2% of tokens bought or sold will be burned, which will drastically and continuously reduce the LUNC supply. This is also expected to ignite a significant increase in demand.

In the proposal, it’s also stated that the burning mechanism will be stopped once the LUNC Supply reaches 10 billion tokens. It’s believed that at this level, LUNC will be scarce enough to fight for recovery.

Although the digital asset is still very far from where it was trading before the historic crash, a massive and continuous burn could greatly help in recovering a portion of its losses.

On July 20, a proposal to upgrade the Terra blockchain and add three new updates went live for voting on Terra Station. This proposal named Prop 894 successfully passed on July 27, after it gained maximum support from the Terra community.

Prop 894 is a proposal type that requires the Terra blockchain to be halted at a specific block height for nodes to update their software. Therefore, the Terra chain will be shortly halted at block 890000 for the three new updates to be added to the chain.

As revealed in the proposal, this block height will be reached at approximately 12:00 am UTC on July 29, 2022. To enable a smooth chain upgrade, the Software Upgrade Governance function will be employed. 

The first update on the proposal will enable the creation of vesting accounts via transactions. Initially, vesting accounts could only be created during Genesis. 

Outstandingly, this condition hindered the execution of the planned LUNA airdrop. Interestingly, with this update tagged ‘Enable vesting account creation via transaction’ in play, the LUNA airdrop would be executed. 

The second update aims to correct a discrepancy that occurred during Genesis of the Terra blockchain. From the proposal, “an exchange with the wallet address terra1chq5ps8yya004gsw4xz62pd4psr5hafe7kdt6d was incorrectly whitelisted during Genesis.”

Therefore, the update aims to adjust the vesting period for the Pre-Attack LUNC allocation for this wallet address. “1.137M LUNA will be unlocked with this update, and the vesting schedule for the remaining LUNA will be adjusted to a 6-month cliff, 2-year vesting,” Prop 894 showed. 

The last update on the list is geared toward enabling any user to send their vesting LUNA tokens to the Community Pool via transaction.

Developments on New Terra Blockchain Increases

Following the historic collapse of the old Terra ecosystem tokens UST and LUNC, a new Terra blockchain was born. This Terra 2.0 has a native token with the ticker LUNA and is void of the algorithmic stablecoin, UST. 

Several developments have since been recorded on the new chain. On Monday, LUNA was the top searched token, according to Coinmarketcap. This could mean that some investors still have faith in Terra (LUNA), the embattled cryptocurrency project.

After being slammed by affected angry investors coupled with several government investigations as well as lawsuits, the South Korean entrepreneur proposed a comeback naming it Terra 2.0.

Following the success of the proposal, a new Terra blockchain (Terra 2.0) was launched, devoid of the controversial stablecoin TerraUSD (UST). The associated token of this Terra 2.0  now has the ticker LUNA.

Meanwhile, the old Terra blockchain is now renamed Terra Classic, while the native token is labeled LUNC.

More so, a corresponding airdrop accompanied Terra 2.0 launch. Based on the different snapshots taken and other parameters checked, LUNC holders were airdropped partly while anticipating future issuances as stated in the airdrop distribution plan.

Unfortunately, Terra 2.0 LUNA token saw a huge price decline moments after its launch. Therefore, affected Terra 1.0  investors still could not recover their losses.

Meanwhile, Do Kwon, TerraForm Labs, and the LUNA Foundation Guard are facing several investigations and judicial cases from the Korean government and other litigation firms. While some have labeled the crypto entrepreneur a ‘fraudster’, Do Kwon noted that there is a difference between falling and running a fraudulent project.

Recently, a travel ban has been placed on key designers of TerraForm Labs. Similarly, Scott+Scott Attorneys at Law LLP filed a class action against Do Kwon, TFL’s Head of Research, Jump Crypto, Three Arrows Capital, and many other crypto firms.

Do Kwon Stays Optimistic

Regardless of the ongoing challenges and woes faced by the CEO, he remains confident in his team’s ability to develop more solid and better projects. According to people familiar with the matter, developers are working to relaunch applications on Terra 2.0. 

In a Wednesday interview with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Do Kwon, CEO of TFL said, “I have great confidence in our ability to build back even stronger than we once were.” He added that “Many builders are in the process of relaunching their apps on the new chain.”

There were lots of unconfirmed reports on the 11th of June that claimed that Do Kwon participated in draining liquidity out of the collapsed Terra (LUNA) and TerraUSD (UST) before the historic crash to purchase US dollar-pegged stablecoin such as Tether (USDT).

The reports also alleged that Do Kwon was cashing out $80 million on a monthly basis to accrue $2.7 billion altogether. But he has refuted all these allegations.

“Mystery” Wallet That Was Voting On His Proposal Belongs To Do Kwon

A tweet shared by FatMan, a member of the Terra research forum and the Whistleblower of the Terra community, has confirmed that the “mystery” wallet that was used to submit one of his proposals belongs to Do Kwon.

According to FatMan, the secret wallet holds a total of 20 million LUNA sent to it by TFL about two years ago and voted in his proposal, delegating to North Star, and lots more.

In the same thread of tweets, FatMan revealed that the same “mystery” wallet was used by Kwon to submit a proposal in August 2021, titled, “Columbus-5 Mainnet Upgrade Proposal and Recommendations.”

LUNA 2.0 was launched, it began trading on ByBit at around $30, but crashed by about 80% a few hours later. At the time of writing, Terra (LUNA 2.0) is trading at $2.88, according to CoinMarketCap.

It can be recalled that Do Kwon was warned by several crypto experts, such as Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ), that creating a new chain is never an option in getting the collapsed ecosystem back on track, but a massive burn of Terra Classic (LUNC) should rather be initiated.

Also, a number of Terra community members called for the burning of LUNC, but Kwon and his team of validators remained determined on creating Terra 2.0.

Experts Say LUNA 2.0 Has No Future

Bloomberg taped the opinions of four experts, who discussed the collapse of the Terra blockchain and the creation of Terra 2.0, concluding that the new chain and its native token, LUNA 2.0, have no future.

According to Mati Greenspan, the founder of Quantum Economics, LUNA 2.0 was never meant to grow. He said it was only created to make large investors who were heavily affected by the crash of UST and LUNA to recover a fraction of their losses. He said no factor is capable of aiding the growth of the new digital currency.

Mati Greenspan noted:

“Luna 2 was never meant to survive, it was simply a mechanism for some who were heavily invested to recoup some of their losses at the expense of new money coming in from the hype. I don’t see any reason for the price to go up ever.” 

Another analyst at Messari, Kunal Goel, who spoke with Bloomberg said that it will be hard for LUNA 2.0 to survive because it was created during the bear market. He said the old LUNA derived its growth from TerraUSD (UST), but the new one does not have such support. Also, the legal issue is a bad signal:

“Terra 2.0 suffers from multiple problems. It has gone live in an unfavorable macro and crypto environment. Without an algorithmic stablecoin, it has no clear point of differentiation from other smart contract platforms. Finally, the regulatory overhang is a key concern in investors’ minds.”

An analyst at Kaiko, Riyad Carey, is of the opinion that it will be difficult for LUNA 2.0 to gain footing in the market dominated by Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche. He also said the lack of a burning mechanism is a negative factor for the growth of LUNA 2.0.

“Luna 2 will have a difficult time distinguishing itself in a crowded L1 ecosystem with large players like Avalanche and Solana and of course Ethereum. While the original Terra had a fairly robust ecosystem, much of that activity was centered around UST and aUST (UST earning yield in Anchor).

“Additionally, some of the price action was based around the burning of LUNA to create UST. So now Luna 2 doesn’t have this mechanism, will be facing inflation in the form of vesting/unlocks, and obviously has the baggage of being tied to the largest ever crypto collapse. So it will definitely be a tough path forward.”

Lastly, the founder and CEO of KoinBasket, Khaleelulla Baig stated that Terraform Labs and Do Kwon have lost credibility in the crypto industry, which is currently having a negative impact on the new token they created.

“Everyone wants to exit the new Luna as the founder Do Kwon has lost credibility among the community. Luna has no future. The founder didn’t build firewalls around the algo even when they had an opportunity to do so.

That’s why they have lost credibility. Building the new Luna within the existing community will not make any sense now. Smart money will move to fundamental coins from such risky coins.”

He also spoke about misinformation and falsehood that are currently making the rounds across the media, stating that they are working to correct every misinformation.

He further stated that Terraform Labs “consciously bowed out of airdrop allocations” to prove that Terra 2.0 blockchain is community-driven.

Do Kwon noted:

“While most of our efforts had been spent on Terra 2.0 and making sure ecosystem developers can find a home after the depeg incident, we will soon be more proactive in communicating with the press & getting the right information out there.

“There’s a lot of misinformation and falsehood out there, and we promise to do our part in making sure as much of it is correct as possible. A few tips to help us engage:

“First, TFL’s official media inquiry channel is comms at terra.money – many people have been messaging us in various languages, but if it is not in English we just wouldn’t have the linguistics capability to respond.

Open source development is transparent, and I would urge media to check if a single line of code by your “experts” has ever made it into production for Terra Core, Anchor, or any other essential services and if they’ve not made any contributions during their internship, would double and triple check the validity of their expert opinion.

“Lastly, while TFL intends to continue supporting and building on the Terra 2.0 network, it is not by any means a “TFL-led” chain – we consciously bowed out of airdrop allocations and all the decisions are being made by various community groups, albeit in a rocky fashion.
