]]> An Ethereum investor has lost more than $12 million due to a complex address poisoning scam, showing the risks associated with convenience-focused transactions in the crypto space. The user accidentally transferred 4,556 ETH, which is valued at approximately $12.4 million, to a malicious wallet that appeared legitimate.

How the Scam Worked

According to Lookonchain, the scammer created a fake wallet address that closely matched a trusted recipient, using the same first and last four characters as Galaxy Digital’s actual deposit address. Small “dust” transactions were sent to the victim’s wallet to make the spoofed address appear familiar within the transaction history.

The Ethereum user, who frequently sends funds to the legitimate recipient, copied the address from their transaction history without verifying it in full. Due to the fraudulent address being nearly identical, the user did not notice the difference and sent the entire balance to the hacker.

This type of attack, known as an address poisoning scam, is growing in the crypto ecosystem. Scammers rely on users’ everyday behavior—and the potential of not carrying out meticulous verification for an action that is familiar—to execute large-scale thefts. 

A similar case was reported in December 2025, another investor lost $50 million after copying a spoofed address. In that incident, a small test transfer of $50 was manipulated by the attacker to trick the user into sending the remaining balance to the fraudulent wallet.

Caution For Cryptocurrency Users

The incident highlights the importance of exercising extreme caution when sending crypto funds. Users are advised not to rely solely on copying addresses from previous transactions or partial verification based on familiar characters. Full address verification is highly necessary because scammers are relying on partial verifications. 

Experts also recommend sending large amounts in smaller instalments rather than a single transaction. Mark Huber, a crypto user responding to the recent loss, stated that for large transfers, he would divide the total sum into smaller transactions of manageable amounts to reduce risk.

Other safety measures include using ENS domains, wallet address books, or dedicated verification tools to confirm the legitimacy of the recipient’s address. These practices can help prevent the loss of significant funds to address poisoning or other forms of wallet spoofing.

This incident is evidence that even experienced investors can fall victim to scams, especially address poisoning attacks. While copying addresses and prioritizing speed may seem convenient, it can result in devastating financial losses that may never be fully realized. Careful verification and cautious transaction practices cannot be overemphasized for anyone handling substantial cryptocurrency holdings.

Whale Alert, the tracker of large crypto transactions, initially spotted and reported the large Ethereum transfer.

According to the Whale Alert, the Ethereum bag holder relocated 80,000 ETH worth $154.58 million from a wallet of unknown origin to crypto exchange Binance.US.

Blockchain data also shows that the large entity spent less than $4 in ETH to process the multi-million-dollar transaction.

Whale Alert also caught a handful of large Ethereum transactions over the weekend.

One whale shifted 19,093 ETH worth $36.81 million from an unknown wallet to US-based crypto exchange Coinbase. Whale Alert reveals that the whale paid $4.20 to move the large ETH stack.

Whale Alert also tracked the movement of 15,000 ETH worth over $30 million from a wallet controlled by the Ethereum Foundation to the crypto exchange Kraken. The Ethereum developer paid more than $11 to move the ETH trove.

In another transfer, a deep-pocketed investor shifted 12,800 ETH worth $25 million from a wallet of unknown origin to Coinbase. The whale paid less than $11 in transaction fees.

Since all of the ETH mentioned were moved to a crypto exchange, they could potentially be sold on the open market.

At the time of press, Ethereum is trading at $1,824, with a 4.5% price downtrend in the last 24 hours.

]]> An Ethereum whale that has been dormant for about 3 years recently moved a huge amount of the digital token ETH just a few weeks before the Merge that was estimated to play out on the 15th of September.

Per an update by WuBlockchain on Twitter, a certain whale wallet that took part in Ethereum (ETH) Initial Coin Offering (ICO) has transferred out all its holdings to multiple wallets. In 2014, the Ethereum Genesis ICO giant whale wallet obtained 150,000 ETH.

“Ethereum Genesis ICO giant whale 0x4bAf012726CB5EC7Dda57Bc2770798A38100C44d is active again after nearly 3 years of dormancy. Since yesterday, a total of 145,000 ETHs have been transferred out and distributed to multiple wallets,” WuBlockchain tweeted.

In the past two days, a total of 145,000 ETH have been transferred in multiple transactions by the user. It is worth noting that this wallet was last active in July 2019 when the whale sent out 5000 Ethereum coins to Bitfinex.

By then, Ethereum (ETH) was trading at $219 but the top cryptocurrency recently hit the $2000 mark as the crypto market is slowly ending its winter season. The surge in the price of ETH could also be attributed to the fast-approaching major upgrade on the Ethereum network, known as the Merge.

The whale wallet currently holds 0.107 ETH only while the total value of the transferred Ether is worth over $280 million at the current price of ETH.

Dumping or Staking?

This 145,000 ETH transfer by the whale address has been met with several speculations from crypto Twitter. While some claim that the Ethereum whale intends to dump these coins, some opine that the user is gearing up for the staking activity that will soon be enabled on the largest smart contract platform.

The Ethereum mainnet Merge with the Beacon Chain which is scheduled for September 19, will transition Ethereum to a PoS network. The ultimate goal is to make the blockchain more scalable and less expensive for users.

The bear continues to overwhelm the market as cryptocurrencies struggle to hold their respective supports to prepare for a fresh uptrend.

Based on the update, BlueWhale0073 is currently the 291st biggest Ethereum whale and the whopping purchase was performed once.

WhaleStats tweeted, “ETH whale “BlueWhale0073” just bought 86,740,251,500 SHIB ($1,015,728 USD). Ranked #291 on WhaleStats.”

It has become the custom of BlueWhale0073 to move enormous Shiba Inu tokens purchased to a mysterious wallet. The habit was repeated recently.

According to the data found on Etherscan, within 9 minutes of the purchase, BlueWhale0073 sent a total of 88,363,976,794 SHIB tokens worth $1,036,563 to one of the mysterious SHIB whale wallets. This huge transaction brought BlueWhale0073’s balance to 1,033,438,545 SHIB worth $11,946.

This mysterious activity of the Ethereum whale has been playing out since Shiba Inu (SHIB) was listed on the leading investing app Robinhood. Since the listing was made official, the Shiba Inu whale wallet has received a total of 4.68 trillion SHIB, worth $54.14 million at current prices.

Based on the data on Etherscan.io, 206,665,540,849 SHIB of the mammoth accumulation was subsequently transferred to one of the mysterious wallets that were discovered around the time Robinhood listed Shiba Inu (SHIB). The number of SHIB tokens in the whale’s wallet now stands at 2,156,477,845 SHIB worth around $22,000.

It’s worth noting that BlueWhale0073 has been spotted on several occasions sending SHIB tokens in billions to the mysterious whale wallet.

BlueWhale0073 Buys 311 Billion SHIB

According to the report shared by WhaleStats, the tracker of 5000 biggest Ethereum bag holders, an ETH whale identified as BlueWhale0073 bought a whopping 311,816,880,855 SHIB worth $4,801,979 at the time of purchase. The report says the huge acquisition was carried out in a single transaction.

WhaleStats tweeted, “ETH whale “BlueWhale0073” just bought 311,816,880,855 SHIB ($4,801,979 USD). Ranked #222 on WhaleStats.”

Based on the data on Etherscan.io, 304,447,537,333 SHIB of the mammoth accumulation was subsequently transferred to one of the mysterious wallets that were discovered around the time Robinhood listed Shiba Inu (SHIB). The number of SHIB tokens in the whale’s wallet now stands at 7,660,744,611 SHIB worth around $120,000.

It’s worth noting that BlueWhale0073 has been spotted on several occasions sending SHIB tokens in billions to the mysterious whale wallet.

BlueWhale0073 Accumulated 289 Billion SHIB Tokens in 24 Hours

According to WhaleStats and as earlier reported by Times Tabloid, BlueWhale0073’s first transaction carried the sum of 219,332,229,787 SHIB worth $5,454,792 when the purchase was initiated.

As also reported by WhaleStats, the second transaction that was made by BlueWhale0073 carried 70 billion SHIB worth relatively $1,619,800 at the time of the transaction.

So, the recent accumulation performed by BlueWhale0073 brings its total within the last 24 hours to 289.33 Billion Shiba Inu tokens worth about $7 million.

SHIB Flips FTX to Become Number 1 among Top 100 ETH Whales

In another development, WhaleStats says Shiba Inu (SHIB) has displaced FTX Token (FTT) to become the biggest holding position by dollar value among the top 100 Ethereum whales.

WhaleStats reported, “JUST IN: $SHIB @Shibtoken has flipped FTX Token for biggest holding by dollars among top 100 ETH whales.”

So, the increase in SHIB’s position among the biggest ETH whales within the last 24 hours is being attributed to the massive purchase reported above.
