The Samsung Update Problem

Xumm is a non-custodial wallet for the XRP Ledger (XRPL) that allows users to interact with the XRP Ledger and 3rd party tools while safeguarding their keys. The update potentially breaks Xumm wallet’s secure data store, breaking the app’s main function and preventing it from opening. For anyone who hasn’t installed the update, Xumm advises users to be sure that they have their secret keys before installing the update.

Xumm recommends that users with their secret key uninstall Xumm, install the update, and reinstall the application. Then they can import their account using the secret key.

Xumm strongly encourages users facing problems to use the Xumm Support xApp within the application. The support team emphatically warns against relying on social media channels for support, primarily due to the proliferation of counterfeit support accounts on X trying to scam unsuspecting users.

Xumm also clarifies that this is not a security breach on their end, and users’ wallets have not been tampered with. The problem comes from the new Samsung update.

One user called for Samsung to explain how this happened, and another stated that his Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra had no problems after the update. They speculated that this could have been caused by a more specific problem and not just the update. However, they commended Xumm for giving its users a heads-up.

One user added that he didn’t have any problems with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, another stated that he had the same issue on that phone.

Xumm was emphatic that this was not a breach. However, the issue does not occur on every phone with the update installed, so this might be bigger than just installing an update.

Meanwhile, a crypto enthusiast recently lost 17,000 XRP on her ledger wallet. Although Xumm hasn’t been hacked, it is important for users to follow instructions and only seek help from official help channels like the Xumm xApp.

A Comparative Advantage for XRPL

According to the announcement, the SimpleSwap integration only supports inbound XRP swaps. That is, users can convert their crypto assets from several blockchain networks such as Cardano, Ethereum, and others into XRP. However, the development does not support users swapping their XRP tokens for other cryptocurrencies.

The team behind the project noted that this barrier was put in place to protect users and minimize the risk of hacks. The wallet controls what happens when it receives crypto tokens. On the other hand, outgoing transactions to non-XRPL ledgers cannot be handled by Xumm. 

The press release added that the creator of xrp.cafe, an XRP-based NFT marketplace, inspired the integration of SimpleSwap into the Xumm wallet when it was discovered that many new users could not smoothly access the XRPL ecosystem.

The user asked, “Do you think it is gonna be possible that one day we can use our XUMM tangem card to purchase something in-store? or you integrated a Debit card into XUMM wallet? I love XUMM so just throwing some thought, I don’t even know if it’s possible or not.”

In response, the developer noted that a better solution is currently being developed by the XRPL Labs team, citing that a QR payments feature built on the XRP Ledger will be launched sooner than later to enable Xumm wallet users to make purchases in retail stores.

This update comes shortly after the XRPL Labs team onboarded a remarkable element for the Xumm Pro Wallet users, enabling the app users to link their XRP wallets to their usernames and profile pictures. This Xumm Profiles feature as it is called was announced last week. Generally, it allows Xumm wallet users to seamlessly move their XRPL-based assets using usernames and profile pictures instead of the usual long alphanumeric addresses.
