Morgan Stanley has taken a major step toward expanding its crypto services by applying for a National Trust Bank Charter. This charter would allow the bank to custody Bitcoin and other digital assets under federal oversight.

The move positions Morgan Stanley to integrate digital assets more directly into its banking operations, signaling growing institutional acceptance of cryptocurrencies like XRP.

Morgan Stanley’s XRP Research

Crypto researcher SMQKE (@SMQKEDQG) highlighted the significance of this development, pointing to Morgan Stanley’s existing research on Ripple and XRP. In his post on X, SMQKE emphasized two key points from Morgan Stanley’s analysis.

First, the bank recognizes XRP as “a leading international payment alternative to SWIFT.” Second, Morgan Stanley documents note that XRP’s system is “more efficient than Bitcoin and is closer to what traditional banks do today.” These statements show a deep institutional understanding of XRP’s operational design and potential role in banking infrastructure.

“Morgan Stanley considers Ripple to be a leading international payment alternative to SWIFT.”

+

Morgan Stanley Document: “XRP’s system is MORE EFFICIENT THAN BITCOIN and is CLOSER TO WHAT TRADITIONAL BANKS DO TODAY.”

Morgan Stanley is aware of the bigger picture.

— SMQKE (@SMQKEDQG) February 28, 2026

XRP’s Efficiency Compared to Other Cryptocurrencies

Morgan Stanley’s research has long detailed XRP’s efficiency compared to traditional cryptocurrencies. While energy intensity data is limited, the bank observed that XRP’s consensus protocol is much faster than Bitcoin’s proof-of-work system, taking 3-5 seconds per transaction compared to 10 minutes for Bitcoin.

The analysis also notes that Ripple’s system is a centralized intermediary to check transactions, making it closer to traditional banking processes. This structure allows for rapid settlements while maintaining security, a combination that traditional institutions find appealing.

Ripple’s Impact on Payment Processing

The bank also emphasized Ripple’s broader impact on payment processing. According to prior research, adopting a Ripple-like payment system could “shorten settlement periods, speed up transactions and reduce the risk of fraud.”

Morgan Stanley considers Ripple to be a strong alternative to SWIFT, capable of streamlining international transfers and reducing operational inefficiencies. The findings indicate that Ripple’s ledger technology can enhance both speed and reliability in cross-border payments.

Custody Potential and Institutional Integration

The potential for Morgan Stanley to custody XRP and other digital assets is significant. It suggests that the bank could integrate XRP more directly into its internal operations, offering clients faster and more efficient transaction options.

The charter would allow Morgan Stanley to leverage its institutional trust while providing secure access to crypto liquidity. This step mirrors Ripple’s approach with its own banking charter, creating parallel paths for regulated adoption of digital assets within established financial frameworks.

For years, major banks kept crypto at arm’s length. They offered limited exposure, tested the waters with investment products, and waited for clearer regulation. That cautious stance now appears to be shifting. A new institutional move suggests that Wall Street no longer views digital assets as a fringe experiment but as infrastructure worth building around.

In a recent post on X, market commentator Mark revealed that Morgan Stanley has applied for a national trust bank charter that would allow it to custody Bitcoin and other crypto assets directly.

Mark emphasized that this step could enable the Wall Street giant to facilitate digital asset purchases and swaps for its roughly 18 million clients. Such a move would represent a significant expansion beyond indirect exposure into direct crypto custody operations.

A Major Institutional Infrastructure Shift

Morgan Stanley already provides crypto exposure to select clients through ETFs and structured products. However, direct custody marks a deeper institutional commitment. Large financial institutions require secure, regulated storage solutions before they allocate meaningful capital. A national trust bank charter would position Morgan Stanley to operate within a compliant framework while maintaining control over digital asset safekeeping.

BREAKING: This is MASSIVE news for Alts…

Morgan Stanley is going all-in on Crypto – and they like $XRP over Bitcoin.

Morgan Stanley just applied for a national trust bank charter to custody Bitcoin and crypto assets.

This is a Wall Street giant applying to custody crypto… pic.twitter.com/vKjmMGu7oD

— Mark (@markchadwickx) February 28, 2026

This development fits into a broader pattern across traditional finance. Banks increasingly invest in blockchain infrastructure as regulatory clarity improves. Institutional adoption depends less on speculation and more on reliable rails that integrate digital assets into existing financial systems.

Why XRP Stands Out

Mark also highlighted Morgan Stanley’s prior commentary on Ripple’s technology. In an earlier report, the bank described Ripple as a leading international payment alternative to SWIFT.

Internal documentation reportedly noted that XRP’s transaction system operates more efficiently than Bitcoin’s and aligns more closely with traditional banking infrastructure in terms of speed and cost.

These observations shift the conversation from narrative to utility. Bitcoin often serves as a store-of-value asset within institutional portfolios. XRP, by contrast, focuses on settlement efficiency, liquidity provisioning, and cross-border payments. If financial institutions prioritize blockchain solutions that integrate seamlessly with banking operations, XRP’s use case becomes strategically relevant.

We are on X, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1

— TimesTabloid (@TimesTabloid1) June 15, 2025

Regulatory Clarity and the Bigger Picture

Mark connected Morgan Stanley’s custody application with broader regulatory and institutional momentum. Major banks such as Citi continue to build digital asset infrastructure, while proposed legislation like the Clarity Act seeks to define compliance pathways for crypto markets. Clearer rules reduce uncertainty and encourage larger institutions to participate more directly.

It is important to separate confirmed actions from market enthusiasm. Morgan Stanley has applied for custody capabilities. It has not formally declared a preference for XRP over Bitcoin. However, its documented recognition of Ripple’s payment efficiency reinforces XRP’s institutional narrative.

If custody infrastructure, regulatory clarity, and utility-driven blockchain adoption converge, institutional capital could expand significantly. In that environment, assets designed for real-world financial integration may capture increasing attention.

The digital asset market has reached a new stage, with major financial institutions taking more direct steps into the sector.

A recent post by Algopear co-founder HighVibeAssets highlighted how years of opportunity for retail investors to accumulate cryptocurrencies have now transitioned into a period where large-scale institutional adoption is becoming the dominant force.

The emphasis was on the involvement of major names such as Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, and Citigroup, which signals a significant structural change in the market. This transition could prove highly beneficial for XRP, as institutions are increasingly seeking assets with both compliance readiness and real-world financial utility.

YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE TO ACCUMULATE #CRYPTO FOR YEARS, NOW YOU WONT EVEN GET A PORTION

Morgan Stanley’s Crypto Integration

The timing of Morgan Stanley’s decision to expand crypto services through E-Trade represents a broader evolution of mainstream finance.

In a Bloomberg discussion shared alongside the post, commentators explained how Morgan Stanley is not necessarily first but is positioning itself within the current regulatory framework that appears more favorable for banks.

The move is described as one of the first notable announcements where a traditional financial institution partners with a crypto trading firm to provide clients with direct access.

Developments like this reinforce the idea that institutional adoption will increasingly prioritize cryptocurrencies with established settlement and payment functions, such as XRP. XRP’s design as a fast, low-cost solution for cross-border transactions positions it well to benefit from the same financial institutions that are now entering the crypto space.

By integrating crypto through familiar platforms like E-Trade, Morgan Stanley is not only broadening access but also creating an environment where utility-driven assets such as XRP can gain recognition beyond speculation.

Regulatory Climate and Institutional Confidence

The commentary from Bloomberg further highlighted that this decision reflects a more supportive regulatory environment. Analysts suggested that the new framework may encourage more banks to partner with crypto firms, providing legitimacy and increased accessibility.

The conversation acknowledged the volatility that has historically defined the crypto market, but also emphasized that financial advisors and client education will play a role in helping investors manage risks.

We are on X, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1

— TimesTabloid (@TimesTabloid1) June 15, 2025

This evolving climate could be particularly bullish for XRP as institutions are expected to favor assets that align with regulatory clarity and established use cases in financial infrastructure.

As XRP continues to see integration in payment corridors and adoption by financial service providers, it offers the type of utility that banks and wealth managers may prioritize when building diversified client portfolios. In this context, XRP could emerge as one of the primary beneficiaries of institutional entry.

A Market Entering a New Phase

The message from HighVibeAssets underlines a critical transition point in the digital asset sector. What was once largely an opportunity for independent accumulation has evolved into a market where institutions play an increasingly central role.

With Morgan Stanley’s move into crypto through E-Trade and the broader involvement of firms such as BlackRock and Citigroup, the industry is entering a phase where mainstream adoption is not theoretical but actively unfolding.

For XRP, this normalization process presents an opportunity to shift investor perception. As institutions seek assets that can serve as more than speculative instruments, XRP’s proven efficiency in global payments may attract significant institutional allocation.

Morgan Stanley, an American multinational investment bank and financial services company, has consistently been at the forefront of innovations shaping the financial landscape. The bank’s recent analysis suggests a disruptive role for cryptocurrencies in the global financial system throughout 2024.

According to snippets of the report shared on X by SMQKE (@SMQKEDQG), among the various digital currencies, Ripple and its digital asset XRP have gained particular attention for their potential to transform international transactions and financial operations.

Disruptive Potential of Cryptocurrencies

Morgan Stanley’s report notes the capacity of cryptocurrencies to redefine financial systems worldwide. Highlighting Bitcoin’s market capitalization, which rivals the GDP of major economies such as Switzerland, the report emphasizes the broader implications of digital currencies.

The rise of stablecoins and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) is noted as a key factor in reshaping global finance. These technologies offer enhanced efficiency, reduced transaction costs, and greater financial inclusivity, posing a significant challenge to traditional financial systems.

Ripple’s Role in International Transactions

In one of its reports, Morgan Stanley identified Ripple as a leading alternative to the traditional SWIFT system for international payments. The BRICS bloc is currently searching for a viable SWIFT replacement, and Ripple’s distributed ledger technology significantly reduces settlement times, accelerating transaction processes and minimizing fraud risk.

Ripple’s efficient transaction mechanism positions it as a superior choice for interbank payments, potentially replacing the SWIFT network. Morgan Stanley’s endorsement highlights Ripple’s ability to offer a robust and efficient system for cross-border transactions, aligning with the consultancy’s vision for a transformed financial landscape.

XRP’s Technological Efficiency

Morgan Stanley’s research further highlights XRP’s technological advantages over Bitcoin. XRP utilizes a consensus protocol that is significantly more efficient than Bitcoin’s proof-of-work (PoW) system.

This protocol allows the XRP Ledger to confirm each block within 3-5 seconds, compared to the 10 minutes required by Bitcoin’s blockchain. Additionally, XRP’s consensus protocol consumes far less energy, making it an environmentally sustainable choice for digital transactions.

The report also indicates that Ripple’s payment system requires intermediary checks for transactions, aligning it more closely with traditional banking operations. This hybrid approach offers the best of both worlds: the efficiency of digital currencies and the security of established financial protocols.

Morgan Stanley’s insights into the disruptive potential of cryptocurrencies and the strategic role of Ripple and XRP mark a significant milestone in the evolution of global finance. Ripple is already gaining recognition for its technology with major partnerships with Apple, and other multinational companies.

In 2024, Ripple and XRP could be pivotal in reshaping global cross-border payments, promising a future of faster, cheaper, and more secure financial transactions.

Morgan Stanley, one of the world’s biggest investment banks, with $6.5 trillion in Assets Under Management (AUM), has recently disclosed that it currently holds Bitcoin (BTC), the largest cryptocurrency by market cap, on behalf of its fund customers.

In a recent filing, the Morgan Stanley Europe Opportunity Fund revealed that it purchased $3.6 million worth of GBTC (in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust).

The filing reads in part:

“The Fund may, consistent with its principal investment strategies, invest up to 25% of its total assets in a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Fund…

“The Subsidiary may invest in bitcoin indirectly through cash settled futures or indirectly through investments in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (BTC) (“GBTC”), a privately offered investment vehicle that invests in bitcoin.”

This fund, which mostly holds British, Italian, French, Swiss, and Dutch equities, aims to “maximize capital appreciation by investing primarily in high-quality established and emerging companies located in Europe that the investment team believes are undervalued at the time of purchase.”

The US-based GBTC has therefore been added as a diversifier, with the overall European Opportunity Fund stated as having $1 billion in assets, but this specific one has about $120 million.

Morgan Stanley has therefore allocated 3% of the assets to bitcoin, although those GBTC shares are now worth $1 million so at this point, it is 1%.

Meanwhile, academic studies have suggested that at least 1% of a portfolio should be allocated to bitcoin for higher risk-adjusted returns.

Denny Galindo, an analyst from banking giant Morgan Stanley, has stated that the largest smart contracts platform, Ethereum (ETH), may lose market share to faster and cheaper competitors, such as Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), Polkadot (DOT), Algorand (ALGO), among others.

According to the investment strategist’s bear case scenario shared in a new report, in addition to the current scalability issues, Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, could face regulations and close competition from its contenders in the future.

Read Also: Analyst Makes Bullish Solana (SOL) Predictions for Each Year until 2030: Details

Galindo stated in the report that Ethereum’s scalability issue may keep escalating due to the continued congestion on the network, which resulted in outrageous transaction fees. He pointed out that ETH may become overwhelmed if it fails to upgrade its network.

The investment strategist also discussed how the looming regulations could directly impact Ethereum-based decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) markets.

Denny Galindo noted:

“Ethereum faces more competition in the smart contract market than Bitcoin faces in the store-of-value market. Ethereum may lose smart contract platform market share to faster or cheaper alternatives…

“The second major Ethereum-specific risk is blockchain bloat and scalability. Blockchains are fundamentally expensive technologies because they have built-in redundancy.

Read Also: Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary Explains Why He’s Bullish on Solana and Polygon and Hedera

“In order to be a global smart contract platform, Ethereum needs to store a very large amount of data (primarily variables for each smart contract), and it needs to be faster and less expensive to use per transaction than potential alternatives… Over time, Ethereum’s storage demand, unless changed, will likely outstrip its resources…

“The changing regulatory landscape poses another big risk. Much of the activity on Ethereum is in DeFi and NFTs – two areas with rapidly evolving regulations. Regulations that restrict or eliminate certain market segments, such as finance, from using Ethereum could reduce demand for Ethereum transactions.”
