According to Kim, if the proposal is passed via the ongoing governance voting, it will re-open IBC channels to Osmosis, Juno, and Crescent within the Cosmos blockchain by the 5th of December 2022.

Since the proposal is expected to boost the embattled Terra Classic ecosystem, it received the vast support of community members, including the approval of ClassyCrypto, a popular LUNC validator.

Why is the IBC Re-enabling Important?

According to the proposal’s content, developers found it necessary to fast-track the re-enabling of IBC channels considering the incessant changes in the Cosmos ecosystem and the broad testing required to reach a technological parity.

The approval of this new proposal will allow users to access the trapped liquidity within the ecosystem. However, the interoperability will not be entirely beneficial for the Terra Classic chain if v23 is not rolled out. This is because the network upgrade contains the CosWasm update.

In order to speed up this process, the Terra Classic team has slated the launch of the v23 upgrade for December. However, the team has not disclosed the actual release date.

Members of the Terra Classic community are anticipating IBC re-enabling and Cosmos interoperability, to make more projects build on the blockchain and to also expand its use cases.

Following the USTC de-peg incident experienced in May, several Cosmos chains were disconnected from the Terra Classic blockchain. Hence, the Terra Classic network could no longer communicate with these blockchains, causing some LUNC assets to be trapped outside of its chain. 

This has made the re-opening of the IBC channels on the Terra Classic blockchain become a top priority for the community, considering its function in the revitalization of the embattled Terra Classic project.

On Monday, Edward Kim shared a proposal to reopen IBCs between Terra Classic and these three disabled channels including Osmosis, Juno, and Crescent.

Part of the proposal read, “the YES vote indicates that the chain should adopt this patch now and proceed with the opening of the channels and clients between the three channels, Osmosis, Crescent, and Juno. A NO vote indicates that the community does not want to proceed with reopening IBCs at this time. The reopening of IBCs will then be revisited at a later time with a broader L1/L2 chain upgrade.”

According to Kim, the target block to re-open these three IBC channels is 10,542,500. This block height will be reached on the Terra Classic network on December 5th, 2022, per the proposal. 

Edward Kim mentioned that validators will be asked to upgrade to v1.0.4 before the designated block height, 10,524,500 if the proposal passes. “The upgrade does not require a chain halt and preliminary testing has been successful,” he added. 

The opening of these three channels would allow the trapped assets on both sides of the channel to flow via the opened IBC channel. Edward Kim added that the Osmosis chain has the most trapped LUNC assets. Additionally, the passing of the proposal would result in the reenabling of the LUNC market swap mechanism on Osmosis, Juno, and Crescent.

Although the proposal is yet to be officially passed, it has gained massive support from members of the Terra Classic community including a popular LUNC network validator, Classy Crypto.

IBC is a three-layered network protocol that enables interconnection between blockchains. By utilizing the high-level IBC channels, different chains can interchange information such as the transfer of funds. 

According to the Terra Classic community, the success of the IBC re-activation ambition would lead to the release of trapped LUNC tokens. It would also enable funds on interconnected chains (Cosmos) to be used in generating yield from their liquidity pools.  

Proposal To Re-open IBC on Terra Classic Network

To this end, Fragwuerdig, one of the trustees of the Terra Classic Community Foundation and a senior partner of TerraCVita, published a proposal titled ‘Cosmoshub IBC Reactivation via Client Unfreeze.’

According to Fragwuerdig, who is also a validator on the Terra Classic chain, the proposal is geared toward unfreezing the expired IBC Tendermint client which interconnects the Cosmos SDK blockchains.

“There are no significant risks to this proposal being accepted. In the case that this proposal passes and the connection between Terra Classic and Cosmoshub gets reactivated, there is also no significant risk of diluting the Terra Classic on-chain overall supply,” he added.

Although this proposal has gained significant support from the community and members of TerraCVista, the tone of the proposal has raised concerns for some. On Wednesday, TerraCVista wrote on Twitter that the entity will vote ‘Yes’ on the proposal, citing that re-establishing IBC would bring life to Terra Classic.

LUNC Community Criticizes IBC-related Proposal

Meanwhile, a top Terra Rebels admin clarified that the proposal was not from the Terra Rebels group, mentioning that the authors seemed to be imposing the proposal on the community. He wrote,  “voting NO should not mean that the community does not want IBC to be reopened. The prop seems to be designed to advertently force the community to vote “Yes”. This prop was put up by a community member, not TR.” 

ReXx of Terra Rebels also highlighted an untrue assertion in the proposal and added that “IBC code needs to go through a series of testing prior to being voted on. Rushing the code could potentially have detrimental effects,” he stated. He further urged the LUNC community to carefully study and understand the proposal before casting their votes.

Another LUNC community member criticized the proposal which was co-authored by Rex Harrison, stating that it is highly technical and difficult to comprehend.

“We need to categorize/departmentalize proposals better. It’s absurd to ask/allow the community at large to vote on such a technical proposal. Most of us have no clue as to what it is about or how it can potentially benefit or not benefit,” the user said.

In response to the numerous criticisms, Fragwuerdig, one of the co-writers of the proposal tweeted, “this proposal is forcing no one to vote on anything. There is no evil manipulation going on here. It’s just a community member with some technical skills bringing up a proposal.”

In a tweet on November 1, Terra Rebels, the group of developers supporting the progress of the Terra Classic blockchain, revealed that the release of the new version of the blockchain is on track. It also disclosed that the Inter Blockchain Communication (IBC) with the Cosmos network will be re-enabled by the end of 2022.

In a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, the Terra Classic core developer Edward Kim, said, “…we’re looking at reworking the underlying Cosmos tendermint skeleton and upgrading vanilla Cosmos 45.8 and then upgrade to Tendermint v34. If you look at what Jacob Gadikian has done for … Osmosis Notional and Osmosis, they upgraded to 45.9. And that is in our repo.”

Kim also disclosed during the AMA that Tobias Andersen, a fellow core developer, who is also known as Zaradar in the community, is currently working on the upgrade of Tendermint to v37. Howbeit, due to changes in Tendermint, Kim said the developer has a lot to do. Once this is complete, the implementation of CosWasm v1.0.0 will follow, Kim added.

It can be recalled that the IBC protocol between Terra Classic and Cosmos chains was disabled during the historic collapse of the Terra ecosystem. This action was taken by the team in a bid to guard against impermanent losses on UST and LUNA pools on Osmosis and other IBC DEXs.

The re-enabling of IBC will equally allow for the trading of LUNC and USTC on Osmosis, Sei, and Kujira. Importantly, linking with the Cosmos chain will help in bringing back liquidity to the Terra Classic chain and further expand its use cases.

In May, Do Kwon’s TerraUSD (UST), the top algorithmic stablecoin with a huge market cap at that time, lost parity (de-pegged) with $1. This led to a free fall in the price of UST and its sister token, LUNC (which was called Luna at that time).

Due to this crash, Inter Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, which allowed the Terra Classic chain to interact with other chains like Cosmos was disabled. However, this action was taken by the team in a bid to guard against impermanent losses on UST and LUNA pools on Osmosis and other IBC DEXs.

In a recent issue, Max Calisto submitted a proposal, citing the associated benefits of re-enabling IBC transfers on Terra Classic. Worthy of note is that Terra Classic upgrades are now managed by a non-TerraForm Labs developer group known as TerraRebels. “It’s a good time to revisit this again since Terra Classic has a vibrant community that will benefit the rest of the Cosmos chains,” Callisto added.

The enabling of IBC will equally allow for the trading of LUNC and USTC on Osmosis, Sei, Kujira, or Terra2. Importantly, creating this link with the Cosmos chain will help in boosting and bring back liquidity to the Terra chain for other uses. 

According to Max Callisto, “IBC being disabled on Terra Classic will only continually isolate Terra Classic from the rest of the Cosmos chains. There’s close to $1mil liquidity on Osmosis for both LUNC & USTC pools that aren’t able to find their way back to Terra Classic except going through CEXes.”

“There’s ~$27m LUNC + UST trapped on Osmosis since May due to the IBC being down. I fully support this proposal. Having spent a good while looking into this issue, details were not easy to find, what I’ve learned is set out in my Reddit post with thanks to Terra Rebels for filling in many blanks,” a LUNC community member named Alesi Sanchez commented. 

So far so good, the endorsement of this IBC proposal by the LUNC community is growing and there is every likelihood that it will pass. 

TerraForm Labs Supports 1.2% LUNC Tax Burn 

To reduce the circulating supply of the community-led crypto token, Terra Classic (LUNC), a proposal to activate a 1.2% tax burn on all LUNC transactions was rolled out and later adopted. While MEXC Global was the first centralized exchange to implement the initiative by rolling out a 5-day burn event, top centralized exchanges like Huobi and Kucoin have followed suit.

Per a Monday update by Rex, a Terra Classic developer and member of TerraRebels, pull request 101 has been officially merged. This indicates that Terraform Labs (TFL) has given its backing to the proposal although it is currently undergoing voting.

“These changes aim to implement the burn tax as voted on Classic governance proposal 3568 and currently undergoing vote in proposal 4661 in all Station views and gas fee calculations on the classic network only. Tax rates will only be displayed on the classic network once the burn tax is activated, and it will not affect any other TXs on different networks,” MarventusWP wrote.
