EIP-1559 Is the Most Important Part of London Upgrade

In an interview with Bloomberg News from Singapore, Buterin acknowledged the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559 as the most important part of the widely publicized London hard fork.

As earlier reported by Market Tabloid, the London upgrade is already having a significant effect on the Ethereum network, as the network now burns approximately 3.7 ETH (worth $10,000 at current prices) every minute.

According to Buterin, the success of the deployment of the London hard fork as scheduled serves as proof that the Ethereum ecosystem is capable of making any significant change.

He thereby stated that “Definitely makes me more confident about the merge.”

London Also Comes With Variable Block Sizes

Aside from fee burning, the London hard fork has also brought variable block sizes into the Ethereum network. This implies that users are likely not to wait endlessly for transactions to be processed in fixed blocks when there is network congestion.

With the latest upgrade, blocks now have the capability to expand or contract dynamically in order to be able to handle the number of incoming transactions. According to Buterin, this is a huge means to enhance user experience on the Ethereum network.

Vitalik Buterin noted:

“Now it gets much easier to send a transaction that will get included in the next block and that’s very important to user experience.”

So far, the London upgrade, coupled with the implementation of EIP-1559, has impacted the price of Ethereum (ETH) in the market positively. At the time of press, ETH is trading at $2,768.03, with a relatively 2% price increase based on 24 hours estimation, according to CoinMarketCap.

Another notable enhancement that came with the London upgrade is the implementation of the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559. With this implementation, a portion of all transaction fees, called the base fee, is now destroyed in each block, instead of going to miners.

Why is EIP-1559 Necessary Now?

Based on the description of EIP-1559 on Ethereum’s official website, it’s designed to offset Ethereum inflation, while still giving the block reward and priority fee to miners.

At the time of filing this report according to Etherchain.org, approximately 3.7 ETH are being destroyed on the Ethereum network per minute after the improvement proposal went live.

Just a few hours after the London upgrade was deployed officially, 630 ETH worth relatively $1.77 million at current prices were burned, while the base fee has been changing hands between 70 Gwei ($5.84) and 100 Gwei ($8.34) over the same period.

The largest burner of ETH currently is OpenSea, the popular non-fungible (NFT) marketplace. It has singlehandedly burned 69 ETH worth around $193,000 over the past hours, according to Ultrasound.money.

Outflow of Positive Sentiments

Since the upgrade went live officially, there has been an outflow of positive sentiments in relation to Ethereum’s development from experts and community members.

Reacting to the latest development, the chief financial officer at decentralized crypto exchange DeversiFi, Ross Middleton, in an email to Decrypt, said:

“The much anticipated EIP1559 network upgrade was a huge day for the Ethereum cryptocurrency ecosystem. Now, every transaction, NFT purchase or loan on the Ethereum network will result in ETH being burned out of existence, making ETH a deflationary and inflation-busting asset.”

Middleton further added that the new mechanism of burning ETH is similar to how it works in the traditional stock markets. He wrote, “Apple Inc burning AAPL shares every time someone bought something from the Apple App store or made an in-app purchase.”

Ethereum (ETH) in the market

Since the London hard fork was deployed along with EIP-1559, the trend of Ethereum (ETH) in the market has been positive as expected.

At the time of filing this report, ETH is trading at $2,804.98, with a relatively 4% price upsurge in the last 24 hours.

According to the report, the London hard fork will launch on block 12 965 000 and would take place between 3rd and 5th August 2021.

Compatibility with London Upgrade

As the report stated, in order to be compatible with the London hard fork, node operators need to upgrade their running client versions, such as go-ethereum (geth), Nethermind, Erigon (f.k.a. TurboGeth), Besu, OpenEthereum (f.k.a. Parity), EthereumJS VM. The versions support London on the Ethereum mainnet. The report provides a download link for each client.

The report noted:

“These releases are different from the previously announced releases that supported London on testnets. Previous vesions do not support London on mainnet.

“The OpenEthereum client will be deprecated after the London upgrade. The OE team is working with Erigon on a smooth transition path for users.”

Stressing the significance of London, the report points out that the upgrade will change how the target gas limit is handled on the network.

Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) That Are Set To Launch with London Upgrade

Five different Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), including EIP-1559 (Fee market change for ETH 1.0 chain), EIP-3198 (BASEFEE opcode), EIP-3529 (Reduction in refunds), EIP-3541 (Reject new contracts starting with the 0xEF byte), and EIP-3554 (Difficulty Bomb Delay to December 1st, 2021) will be implemented along with London Upgrade.

The report also noted that EIP-1559 will bring changes to the block header, add a new transaction type, come with new JSON RPC endpoints, and change the behavior of clients in several areas, such as mining, transaction pool, among others.
