Recall that the Vasil Hardfork Combinator Event (HFC) was executed on September 22. However, the full Vasil upgrade features that have made the chain to be more scalable, less expensive to use, and highly functional were deployed on September 27 alongside the release of a new Plutus cost model (V2). 

In addition, the Vasil upgrade brought new capabilities to the chain like node & CLI support for reference inputs, inline datums, and reference scripts.

A lot of improvements have been evidenced on the Cardano blockchain as a result of this strategic upgrade, especially in the aspect of new Plutus Scripts. Plutus is the smart contract platform of the Cardano blockchain which allows all programming on the blockchain to be done on one Haskell library. Also, Plutus allows developers to write applications that interact with the Cardano blockchain. 

As of September 22 when the Vasil hardfork was executed, the number of real Plutus-based smart contracts or Plutus Scripts on the Cardano blockchain was 3,292. As an effect of the Vasil upgrade, there has been an increase in the number of Plutus Scripts to the tune of 100.

As of October 7, data showed that the number of real Plutus-based smart contracts on the Charles Hoskinson-founded blockchain has grown to 3,392 in just about 15 days.

Accordingly, the number of Timelock Scripts used for Cardano non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has increased dramatically in the same day frame. As of September 22, Timelock Scripts had a total of 67,387 but at the time of writing, this Token Locking Scripts typically used for NFTs has grown to 69,272 in number. 

It is worth noting that the Plutus Scripts were first introduced during the Alonzo Hardfork Combinator event while the Timelock Scripts or token-locking scripts were first rolled out as part of the Allegra hardfork. The Vasil hardfork, however, introduced an improved and efficient Plutus cost model known as Plutus V2.

According to the mathematician, the team is currently preparing for the upcoming Consensus 2022, an event that is slated to hold between 9th and 12th June 2022 in Austin, Texas.

Charles Hoskinson noted:

“We’re renting a large pavilion there, and we’re going to go along with many of the other members of the Cardano ecosystem, and hopefully we’ll be able to showcase that Cardano is open for business.“

Vasil Hard Fork Will Be Huge For Cardano Ecosystem

In the video, Hoskinson also spoke about the reason for being excited about the upcoming Vasil hard fork, which is expected to play out in June. He said he’s also in anticipation of the first enhancement of Cardano’s smart contract platform (Plutus) since it was rolled out in September 2021.

“As many of you know, a major hard fork combinator event is happening in June, which is the Vasil hard fork, and that is going to contain pipelining, which will be a massive performance improvement to Cardano, alongside the first wave of significant Plutus enhancements since Plutus shipped in September.”

Meanwhile, Hoskinson hinted sometime in March 2022 that a wave of projects will flock into the Cardano network once the much-anticipated upgrade is activated in June.

What Is Cardano’s Vasil Hard Fork?

The Vasil hard fork, named after Hungarian mathematician Vasil Daboy, who was a Cardano community member and had a notable impact on Hoskinson’s work, is scheduled to go live in June.

According to Cardano’s creator, Vasil hard fork will apply many of the Plutus adjustments proposed by parties such as the CDA.

Once this hard fork goes live, vital projects like light wallets and other decentralized applications can proceed.

Why the Update Is Important to Cardano Network

According to the report, this recent adjustment is the latest among lots of preplanned optimizations that are targeted at improving Cardano network activity in 2022.

This adjustment and the subsequent ones are needed to boost the user experience as the Cardano network continues to see phenomenal growth.

In a series of tweets, IOG wrote:

This implies that Cardano blockchain will gain more capacity to facilitate the increasing transactions as the network expects more projects to launch on the mainnet in the coming days and months.

It can be recalled that the blockchain load surged above 90% in January, which was attributed to the launch of the decentralized exchange (DEX) SundaeSwap. The experience then called for an urgent need for the network’s boost in scalability.

According to the data provided by Cardano Blockchain Insights, as of 1st February, nearly all blocks were full, with the average load remaining above 85%.

“NETWORK UPDATE: Today, we have proposed the next parameter update as we continue to increase Cardano network capacity in line with the plan. The proposal will increase block size by a further 8KB taking it from 72KB to 80KB.

“This latest adjustment represents an increase of c. 11%. In addition, an update proposal has also today been triggered to increase Plutus script memory units per transaction on the Cardano mainnet from the current 12.5M to 14M – an increase of 1.5M.

“The increases to block size and memory units will both take effect at the boundary of epoch 319 on 4 Feb at 21:44:51 UTC and are in line with our announced plan to scale and optimize Cardano network throughput.

“Together, these enhancements will provide additional resources for Plutus scripts to improve DApp user experience while increasing overall network capacity.

“This adjustment forms part of a planned series of network optimizations. Cardano will continue to be steadily optimized in a series of measured steps this year, carefully & methodically scaling Cardano for future growth as demand increases.”

Cardano Adds Over 100 Smart Contracts in Just Two Days

As a report has it, between 30th January and 1st February, the number of smart contracts on the Cardano network increased by 116, bringing the total number on the network to 1,127 as of 1st February.

As shown on the chart above, it’s important to note that the number of smart contracts on Plutus climbed steadily, until they reached the 1,000 mark, after which it recorded its largest rise ever.

As shared on the platform, Plutus Scripts’ graph represents real Plutus-based smart contracts on the Cardano blockchain, which was introduced as part of the Alonzo mainnet launch.

The launch of Alonzo that brought about smart contracts in September 2021 gave Cardano blockchain the ability to offer decentralized finance (DeFi) applications development platform.

The Alonzo hard fork is part of the network’s Goguen era named after Joseph Goguen, an American professor of computer science from the University of California and the University of Oxford. The Goguen era succeeds the Shelley era, in which the Cardano network became decentralized and community members became validators.

So, the rapid increase in the number of smart contracts on Cardano is an indication that Plutus is gaining much-needed popularity among developers.

Obviously, the implementation of smart contracts functionality on the Cardano has massively increased its network activity. New projects are launching, while more are expected to go live on the blockchain as we advance into 2022.

On 22nd January, it was reported that the Cardano network’s average blockchain load hit an all-time high of 94.49%. This huge rise is attributed to the recent rollouts, especially the launch of decentralized exchange (DEX) SundaeSwap on 20th January 2022.

According to IOG, the major upgrade is expected to provide increased resources for Plutus and the decentralized applications (DApps) using them. Once the upgrade is deployed, it will be monitored for at least five days to determine the next increment.

SundaeSwap Finally Launches

As outlined in a blog post on 15th January, SundaeSwap has finally launched as a fully-functional beta decentralized exchange (DEX), and Yield Farming SUNDAE rewards is expected to start today.

MonoX Finance, new decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol using a single token design for liquidity pools, announced on 30th November that a hacker stole $31 million by leveraging a bug in the software it uses to generate smart contracts.

According to MonoX, the bug in the firm’s software gave room to the hacker to inflate the price of the digital token MONO and then used it to withdraw all the other deposited tokens.

Due to the breach, the attacker successfully stole a total of $31 million worth of MONO on the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains.

MonoX Finance announced, “This morning our contract has been exploited. We are sorry to our users who have deposited funds. The team is investigating and will try our very best to get the stolen funds back. We thank our community for your support.

“A method in the swap contract was exploited and boosted MONO token price to sky-high. The attacker then used MONO token to purchase all the other assets in the pool.”

Charles Hoskinson Touts Cardano’s Plutus Potential

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, Charles Hoskinson, the creator of Cardano (ADA), stated in a tweet that Plutus was written for Cardano to protect the blockchain from such an occurrence.

Charles Hoskinson tweeted, “This is exactly why Plutus was written for Cardano. Good languages and tooling work with the developer and auditor enabling them to write great and secure code. Bad languages load and hand them the gun that they shoot themselves with.”
