The much-anticipated transition of the Ethereum blockchain from the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus algorithm to the proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism is getting closer as the merge is successfully launched on the final testnet, Goerli.
The new development was shared by a developer working on Go Ethereum, identified on Twitter as Marius VanDerWijden. According to the Ethereum developer, the launch of The Merge on Goerli testnet was initially delayed due to some issues that surfaced on the network.
Although developers are still troubleshooting to get around the issue, he said the testnet is currently working smoothly.

Marius VanDerWijden tweeted, “And we finalized on goerli. There was some confusion on the network because of two different terminal blocks and lots of non-updated nodes, so we didn’t finalize earlier. We’re still looking into whats happening, but so far it looks quite good.”
And we finalized on goerli 🚀🚀🚀

The Major Cause of Issues
Regarding what is really causing the problem, Marius said the major issue with the previous and latest testnets is not the code itself, but people not updating to the correct software or misconfiguring their setups.
It's kinda accurate yes, there have been some minor issues found on the previous testnets, but the big thing is people not updating to the correct software or missconfiguring their setups

When a user asked if this is an indication that nodes are failing to properly transition to proof-of-stake mechanism, he said “No, it’s pos/beaconchain nodes not updating correctly.”
The new development shows that things are progressing according to plan. In an announcement in late July, Tim Beiko, an Ethereum core developer, said Prater will run through the Bellatrix upgrade and then merge with Goerli between 6th and 12th August 2022.

In the update, he urged those who run nodes to go through the process as there won’t any more opportunity to get it done before mainnet.
In the announcement, Tim Beiko said, “Prater will run through the Bellatrix upgrade on August 4th, and merge with Goerli between August 6-12th: if you run a node or validator, this is your last chance to go through the process before mainnet.”
So, the recently launched testnet will determine what to expect after the network fully transitions to PoS. The Merge is slated to play out in September. And considering the progress the team is making, Ethereum PoS may happen as scheduled.
