SEC Cancels Open Meeting on Crypto Rules. Here’s What It Means for XRP and Markets

The SEC made a notable last-minute move on August 13, cancelling its open meeting scheduled for today at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Former Fox Business journalist Eleanor Terrett shared the news on X, revealing it was canceled due to a scheduling conflict. She attached the official SEC Sunshine Act Notice confirming the cancellation.

Terrett shared comments from an SEC spokesperson to add context. “The SEC is committed to delivering on the President’s agenda to bring certainty to the crypto space,” the spokesperson said. “Due to an unforeseen scheduling issue, tomorrow’s Open Meeting will be moved to a later date.”

What Was on the Table

The cancelled meeting was no routine administrative session. Commissioners were set to vote on whether to formally propose Regulation Crypto, the agency’s first crypto-specific rulemaking effort.

The proposal would have created a tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets. It would have given token projects a path to raise capital without triggering standard SEC registration requirements.

The SEC announced the meeting on August 10 with only four days’ notice and a compressed timeline that signaled urgency. That urgency followed the Senate’s failure to advance the CLARITY Act before its August recess, pushing that bill’s procedural vote to September 15.

The SEC’s Commitment Remains Clear

The cancellation is a delay, not a withdrawal. The SEC spokesperson confirmed the meeting will be moved to a later date. The agency’s commitment to crypto rulemaking has been stated at the highest levels.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins has made the agency’s position clear. The SEC intends to advance crypto rulemaking regardless of what happens in Congress. Commissioner Hester Peirce has gone further, outlining a concrete agenda that includes custody, tokenized securities trading, and crypto fundraising frameworks. The agency plans to push forward with or without the CLARITY Act.

What It Means for XRP and the Market

Regulatory clarity has long been a key factor for institutional adoption of XRP and digital assets at large. The SEC’s active push toward formal rulemaking signals a market environment that is becoming more defined.

Regulation Crypto, once proposed and finalized, would establish clear rules for crypto fundraising outside traditional securities registration. That kind of structure removes friction for institutions looking to enter the space. XRP already has regulatory clarity, and a formal framework from the SEC adds another layer of certainty for institutions and investors already eyeing the digital asset.

The SEC’s direction has not changed. Crypto-specific rules are coming, and when they arrive, they will move the entire digital asset market toward a more defined future.
