Presently, Cardano is developing its layer-2 (L2) solution, Hydra. While Hydra development begins to near completion, claims of the L2 solution being able to handle over a million transactions per second (TPS) surfaced.

As earlier revealed by Sebastian Nagel, a Cardano developer working on Hydra, the Hydra node’s first mainnet-compatible version was released last week.

Why Hydra?

Hydra is an L2 solution developed to improve Cardano’s market performance, especially the Cardano project’s scalability and overall transaction. Hydra functions by making several “heads” or “subchains” that can run in parallel processing different transactions independently.

In a new development, Marco Meerman, a Cardano Specialized Operator (SPO) took to his official Twitter account to share claims of a possible 1 million Cardano transactions per second (TPS) using Hydra.

What Are KtorZ and Hoskinson Saying About The 1 Million TPS

Matthias “KtorZ” Benkfort, a technical director at the Cardano Foundation, who also doubles as one of the Cardano developers, recently debunked Marco’s 1 million TPS claims, stating that the assertion by Marco was deceptive. Mathias noted, ‘No, it is not. Please stop spreading the “1 million tps” narrative; it is misleading.’

Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano (ADA), also discredited Marco’s claims via a Twitter streaming session he organized. However, reports had it that Hoskinson had likely spread the 1 million TPS narrative unconsciously in one of his live-streaming sessions hosted in March 2020.

Hoskinson reportedly stated, “…as we add more stake pools, we get more heads, and the performance will scale up. For example, if you have a thousand TPS and a thousand heads, you could be looking at the maximum theoretical performance of a million transactions per second.”

Charles Hoskinson, the CEO of IOG, has reacted to the launch of Hydra on the Cardano public testnet, describing the product as one of the fastest and best pieces of applied research in the Cardano ecosystem.

In the screenshot captioned by Hoskinson in a tweet, the Cardano development team announced the launch of Hydra public testnet.

Sebastian Nagel wrote:

“Today, almost one year after we read the Hydra whitepaper [for the] first time back-to-back, we opened the first Hydra Heads on the Public Cardano testnet. This should be the first, which saw the full init, commit, close, & fanout lifecycle. This is a great accomplishment and it’s a pleasure to work with you @Arnaud and @KtorZ.

Cardano Creator Says Hydra Public Testnet Launch Is Significant

In a tweet a few hours ago, Charles Hoskinson, the creator of Cardano (ADA), showcased his excitement on the new development and praised the team of developers behind its success.

Charles Hoskinson tweeted, “I’m extremely proud of the Hydra team for making this milestone. It’s one of the fastest and best pieces of applied research in the Cardano Ecosystem.”

What Is Cardano Hydra?

Hydra is a Layer-2 system that seeks to scale the wider Cardano blockchain by reducing latency and increasing the throughput, or transactions per second (TPS).

According to Input Output Global (IOG), Hydra can reach confirmation times of under one second, compared to the Cardano mainnet latency of 20 seconds.

As the Cardano network advances in terms of growth, with more smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) launching on the blockchain, Hydra will hope to drastically reduce transaction costs.

Charles Hoskinson, the CEO of IOG, who created Cardano (ADA), the largest proof of stake (PoS) blockchain, has outlined developments he expects Cardano to complete in 2022.

In a new interview with Crypto Capital Venture, Hoskinson was asked to outline the Cardano developments he expects to complete this year. In response, he said all that he has outlined, such as sidechains, Hydra and Mithril, will be finished this year.

Read Also: Cardano-Based Game ‘Drunken Dragon: Inns’ Launches Alpha Demo on PC and macOS

Charles Hoskinson noted:

“I think everything will get done that I outlined – the sidechains, the pipelining, the import endorsers, the library optimization, Hydra and Mithril.

“Now there are degrees and flavors like there’ll be more Hydra stuff to do, but at least you’ll be able to use Hydra for something like microtransactions.

“Mithril will be probably completely finished because it’s a finite scope of work, and we had to bring on some sophisticated contractors for it.”

As described by Sebastien Nagel, Software Engineering Lead at Input Output Global (IOG), Hydra is a key layer 2 solution to further improve Cardano’s scalability, layering a new protocol on top of the existing layer 1 blockchain.

Mithril is also described as a protocol that aims to help users join the network with less technical overhead.

Read Also: Historically Accurate Model Predicts Cardano (ADA) Would Reach $3.60 by March 2022

IOG boss further stated that while there will be ways to improve Cardano, the upgrades coming in 2022 have the potentials to make it more competitive among other smart contract platforms:

“You can always optimize pipelining and do more in those heartbeats and the same for input endorsers, there are always ways to optimize that.

“But some version of it will ship… I think we’ll be in an exceedingly strong position to match what we see with Solana and these other platforms, but have the added benefit of being actually decentralized and having real theory and strong foundations behind it.”

Input Output Global (IOG), the software firm behind the development of Cardano (ADA), has highlighted the necessity of Hydra, a layer 2 scaling solution of the Cardano network.

In a blog post a few days ago, Sebastian Nagel, a Software Engineering Lead at IOG stated that just like any permissionless blockchain, Cardano faces challenges when trying to scale to achieve the throughput required to support applications in the real world, such as payment, identification, game, or mobile services.

Read Also: Coin Bureau Host: Cardano To Trigger Largest Explosion in Crypto innovation Since Ethereum Launch in 2015

According to Nagel, as Cardano (ADA) grows in global adoption, there have been growing concerns on the need to prevent transaction fees from becoming too high and transaction history from becoming too large.

Sebastian Nagel noted:

“Cardano transactions incur fees. The people who run the network (in the case of Cardano, the stake pool operator community) need to be rewarded appropriately for the part they play, so fees need to be set at a sustainable level.

“Users want to pay fees they deem acceptable. In addition, the blockchain needs to be protected against Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, for example. Fees can therefore not be set so low as to open up undue risk – DoS events must be made prohibitively costly to a potential attacker. Storage is also a concern, as an ever-growing transaction history can lead to storage problems. Effectively, the most successful blockchains risk becoming ‘victims’ of that very success.”

Read Also: Cardano (ADA) Is Set to Have Its Own DeFi Hub with Launchpad and Decentralized Exchange

Nagel further stated that the two notable concerns can be addressed using the solution embedded in Hydra. He described Hydra as a solution that aims to maximize throughput, minimize latency, incurring low to no costs, and greatly reducing storage requirements.

He added that by providing more efficient means of processing transactions off-chain for a set of users, while using the main-chain ledger as the secure settlement layer, Hydra keeps security guarantees while remaining loosely coupled to the main chain.

Basic Hydra Head Protocol Has Been Implemented

According to Nagel, there have been productive moves to make Hydra a reality on the Cardano network. He said the basic Hydra Head protocol has been implemented as a proof of concept hydra-node.

Nagel added that a developer preview will be made readily available during the upcoming Cardano Summit. Through this, developers will be enabled to run one or more hydra-nodes online, open a Hydra Head with a limited number of participants, and feeding transactions to it.
