Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has come again to challenge the decentralization of XRP, the 5th largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
In a recent interview, Buterin criticized XRP as being completely centralized. Buterin made the remarks while discussing the qualifications that crypto projects must have to be considered part of the space.
“Crypto projects do not need decentralization,” Buterin said. “IOTA and XRP are still completely centralized, but they are still listed as crypto assets on CoinMarketCap.”

Buterin also pointed out that XRP has yet to apologize for writing to the United States government, asking the authorities to favor it over Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
“XRP has not apologized for writing documents to the US government basically saying that they should be favored over Bitcoin and Ethereum because both are China-controlled,” Buterin said.
As expected, XRP community members have reacted angrily to Buterin’s comments. Top XRP enthusiast Riz.XRP said that Buterin is “killing” XRP and other crypto projects outside of Bitcoin and Ethereum. Other XRP enthusiasts have shared instances to prove that ETH is more centralized than XRP.
This is not the first time that Buterin has criticized XRP. In 2020, Buterin urged Ethereum enthusiasts not to come to Ripple’s defense in its legal battle against the SEC.
Also in August 2022, Vitalik Buterin clarified the reason for resenting Ripple and XRP community, following the new regulation in Canada that places restrictions on certain digital assets, including one of the largest smart contract platforms, Solana (SOL).
In his remark in a tweet, he recalled Ripple’s filing of December 2020, which classified Ethereum (ETH) as a China-controlled digital asset.

Vitalik said this in response to an Ethereum community member who said if XRP was restricted in the new regulation, he wouldn’t have bothered.
Vitalik Buterin wrote, “XRP already lost their right to protection when they tried to throw us under the bus as “China-controlled” imo.”
In conclusion, the ongoing debate over the centralization of XRP is likely to continue for some time. However, Buterin’s comments have certainly raised awareness of the issue and have given XRP community members a rallying cry.
