Cardano (ADA) Alonzo Purple Starts Onboarding Users to Testnet

Cardano Alonzo Purple, the much-anticipated upgrade of the Cardano network, which is expected to bring smart contracts functionality to the blockchain, has started to onboard users to its testnet, IOG announced in a series of tweets on 6th August 2021.

IOG announced:

“We’re delighted to announce that we have now successfully spun up Alonzo Purple and have today begun the new user onboarding process.

“This is an exciting and important next step in the Alonzo journey. In fact, the Cardano journey. With the support of our OG community testers on the Blue & White phases, Alonzo Purple will be the first fully public Cardano testnet to support smart contracts

“It’s an important moment, marking significant progress in the rollout of smart contracts on the Cardano mainnet which is targeted for the end of August/early September.

“Our community has been central to the progress made so far. We have now invited the 150+ strong test team to join the new Alonzo Purple network and a new Discord channel.”

It’s worth noting that Alonzo Purple is the third and final stage of the Alonzo hard fork, following the Blue and White phases. As soon as this is successfully deployed, it will be the first public testnet to support smart contracts.

After Alonzo White was deployed about a month ago, it started supporting smart contracts on Cardano, but for only a selected group of 500 users. It also started allowing the minting of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Cardano network will be opened to the full support for smart contracts by the end of August or early September. As soon as the upgrade is deployed successfully in early September as estimated, the network is expected to even start supporting an ERC20 converter.

The development of Cardano has been divided into five updates. According to the deployment order, Cardano is about to complete the Goguen era, which is the implementation of smart contracts. Based on the order, Basho will be the next update, followed by Voltaire.

According to Charles Hoskinson, the creator of Cardano (ADA), in a live update on 6th August, “Alonzo is a lot smoother than Byron and Shelley, a lot more is being upgraded, but the process of upgrading has been so refined it’s amazing we can flip a switch as an ecosystem and it just works on the other side.”
