The XRP Ledger recently addressed a security vulnerability that could have allowed attackers to create an enormous amount of unauthorized XRP, raising questions about the network’s ability to protect its fixed supply.
Financial expert Levi has now explained why the outcome matters to XRP holders, emphasizing that developers fixed the flaw and found no evidence that anyone exploited it on a public network.
In a video on X, Levi described the vulnerability as a serious risk while reassuring investors that developers had addressed the problem. His headline captured the outcome in clear terms: “XRP JUST DODGED A DISASTER!”
Risk of Unauthorized XRP Creation
Levi began his video by referencing concerns among XRP holders about a security flaw in the XRP Ledger. He explained that the vulnerability could have allowed attackers to create XRP without authorization, potentially undermining confidence in the network’s supply.
He compared the potential outcome to a situation in which the Federal Reserve could print billions of dollars without restriction. However, the issue involved a specific vulnerability in the ledger’s payment processing system rather than an actual increase in XRP’s circulating supply.
The flaw involved an integer overflow in the payment engine when it processed multiple trading offers through the network’s built-in decentralized exchange. The same mathematical error also affected a security mechanism designed to verify whether transactions created new XRP legitimately.
According to the technical findings, a successful exploit could have generated approximately 18.45 trillion XRP in a single transaction, an amount more than 184 times the cryptocurrency’s fixed supply of 100 billion tokens.
Developers Patched the Vulnerability
Levi emphasized that developers had already addressed the security issue and found no evidence of exploitation on public networks.
“The team at the XRPL Ripple team, they patched the vulnerability, and they reported no evidence that it was exploited on public networks ever,” he said in the video.
Veria AI, a security system developed by Veria Labs, detected the vulnerability on September 21, 2026. Researchers submitted the finding through the XRP Ledger bug bounty program the following day.
Developers subsequently released xrpld 3.4.1 on September 25 as an emergency update. They bypassed the standard amendment process because delaying the fix could have increased the risk, particularly if the release revealed details that attackers could use to exploit the vulnerability.
The update also addressed a separate bug involving the ledger’s batch-processing mechanism. RippleX engineers reproduced the XRP creation exploit on a standalone server and confirmed that the unauthorized XRP could subsequently be spent.
Security Improvements Matter to XRP Holders
Levi also explained why the discovery and repair of vulnerabilities should not automatically lead investors to lose confidence in a blockchain network.
He noted that developers can build on the XRP Ledger, examine its code, and identify weaknesses that require attention. In his view, this process allows developers to improve the technology and strengthen its security.
“And that’s exactly how technology is meant to work,” Levi said.
The official vulnerability disclosure report appeared on October 9, providing further details about the issue and its resolution.
For XRP holders, the key distinction is that the vulnerability presented a serious potential threat, but investigators found no evidence that attackers exploited it on a public network.
