XRP’s real-world utility has long been central to the investment case surrounding the asset. But Crypto Enthusiast Erin Lane has raised a different question that could become increasingly important as adoption develops.
Rather than focusing only on whether XRP has practical applications, Lane questioned how much of the value created by the XRP Ledger and its wider ecosystem ultimately reaches XRP holders.
Lane Highlights the Value Capture Question
In her tweet, Lane said she believes a perspective shared by Altcoin Daily deserves serious consideration. According to Lane, the key issue for XRP may not be the existence of real-world applications, but whether the network has a mechanism that directly transfers economic value from its usage to the XRP token.
Lane compared this with a buyback mechanism, describing a process in which revenue generated by a protocol can create direct demand for its token through purchases. She summarized the potential relationship as usage generating revenue, revenue supporting buybacks, and buybacks creating token demand.
She suggested that if XRP could eventually establish a comparable value-capture mechanism, the investment case could look significantly different.
I think this perspective from Altcoin Daily is worth serious consideration
The biggest issue with $XRP may not have been whether it has "real world applications" after all
Rather, the question is: how much of the network's value is actually passed on to $XRP holders?

Altcoin Daily’s View on Ripple and XRP
Lane also cited comments from Altcoin Daily, who said he has historically held a strongly positive view of Ripple as a company while remaining less convinced about XRP’s price performance.
In the portion of the video shared, Altcoin Daily said he was “insanely bullish” on Ripple. But noted that XRP had not delivered significant price performance since earlier years. He also mentioned speaking with Sergei at SmartCon in New York and referenced changes made to the ecosystem.
The comments highlight the distinction between confidence in Ripple’s business and expectations for XRP as an asset. Lane’s post focuses on that distinction by asking whether greater network usage necessarily translates into greater value for XRP holders.
Could XRP Become a Liquidity Tool?
Lane also pointed to what she described as XRP’s inclusion in the Digital Commodity category by the SEC and CFTC. From her perspective, this could provide a foundation for XRP to develop beyond its current role as a crypto asset.

She questioned whether XRP could gradually become a liquidity tool used within global financial infrastructure. That possibility would depend on increased institutional adoption and mechanisms that connect network activity with demand for XRP itself.
The attached exhibit also shows proposed XRP Cryptocurrency Event Contracts based on spot XRP prices reported by Lukka. The document describes XRP event contracts as swaps with intraday contracts expiring at specified intervals.
For Lane, the larger question remains whether XRP’s growing utility can eventually produce measurable value capture for the token itself. That distinction could become increasingly important as the XRP ecosystem continues to develop.
