As reported a few days ago by an Ethereum developer, Parithosh Jayanthi, the first-ever mainnet shadow fork played out successfully. More mainnet shadow forks are expected to play out before the much-anticipated merge is implemented on the network.

On 15th April, Ethereum’s All Core Devs Meeting #136 was held to discuss the next phases of pre-Merge testing and Shanghai upgrade.

The latest development was shared on Twitter a couple of hours ago by Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy Digital.

According to Kim, during the meeting, Ethereum developers analyzed the results of the first mainnet shadow fork and decided to schedule two more similar updates for next week on the Goerli testnet and Ethereum’s mainnet.

Christine Kim tweeted, “Ethereum core developers wrapped up another meeting today about the forthcoming Merge and Shanghai upgrades.

“About Merge testing, core devs have an updated timeline for shadow forks. 4th Goerli shadow fork planned for Tuesday and 2nd mainnet shadow fork for next Saturday.”

In the course of the developers’ conference, the Hyperledger Besu team stated that there is an outstanding issue with the recent implementation, which is currently under investigation.

Also, Tim Beiko, an EF researcher and developer, proposed the forking of the Ropsten testnet soon to encourage the early participation of other node operators and ensure everyone is on the same page about how to run nodes after the merge implementation.

Decentralized application (Dapp) developers that are currently working on Rickeby are advised to stop because it won’t be upgraded:

“Rickeby will not be upgraded and therefore should be abandoned by any dapp devs still working on that Ethereum testnet. Next up in the discussion was a few comments about EIPs for Shanghai, which is the hard fork expected to activate as early as 6 months after the Merge.”

It’s worth noting that core devs will no longer accept proposals for Shanghai, the first-ever hard fork of the post-Merge network that is set to take place in the first six months of Consensus Layer’s era.

And the community has been waiting for many years to see it happen.

Last month, Kiln, the next iteration of Ethereum merge testnets, was activated, giving the community the assurance that the upgrade is happening this year.

Just about four days ago, the first-ever mainnet shadow fork played out successfully on the network as announced by an Ethereum developer, Parithosh Jayanthi.

These developments imply that the second-largest cryptocurrency has moved closer to the highly anticipated event known as The Merge. And there has been speculation that the full transition would play out in June 2022. However, this timeframe has recently been contradicted by an Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko.

Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade Not Playing Out In June 2022

A couple of hours ago, a supposed Ethereum miner, identified on Twitter as @TripleSack, asked Tim Beiko about the fate of Ethereum miners after The Merge is implemented.

@TripleSack asked, “Tim Beiko, Any info you can provide for the ETH miners who have been invested in securing the network and supporting the Ethereum project? Or are we going to be left out to dry?”

In response, Tim Beiko urged miners to stop investing more in mining equipment, because their effort will no longer count once the network is fully transitioned to PoS.

In the same thread of tweets, the supposed miner asked the Ethereum core developer if the much-awaited upgrade will be implemented in June this year as many expected.

Tim Beiko responded by bluntly stating that the upgrade is not happening in June, but in a few months after. He said no specific date yet for the implementation, but the process is definitely in its final stage.

Tim Beiko wrote, “It won’t be June, but likely in the few months after. No firm date yet, but we’re definitely in the final chapter of PoW on Ethereum.”

After relatively 2 years of development, Ethereum (ETH), the largest smart contracts platform, has launched the first-ever public testnet for the full upgrade to proof-of-stake (PoS) known as “The Merge”.

The new development was announced on Twitter a few hours ago by an Ethereum core developer, Tim Beiko. According to the core developer in a blog post, although client development and UX continue to be refined, users are urged to start using the Kintsugi in order to familiarize themselves with the Ethereum network in a post-merge context.

Read Also: Ethereum Foundation Launches Client Incentive Program for Network Maintainers

Tim Beiko tweeted, “Over the past few months, client teams have been working tirelessly to implement a new set of merge milestones. They are now live on a new testnet: Kintsugi.”

Going by the report, not much will change for application developers. Also, tooling, which only interacts with either the consensus or execution layer is also largely unaffected. Although the infrastructure that depends on both layers will likely need to adapt to support The Merge.

Read Also: BBVA Switzerland Becomes First Traditional Bank In Europe To Incorporate Ethereum (ETH) into its Crypto Services

“We recommend most projects begin testing and prototyping on Kintsugi to surface any potential issues soon. This way, changes can more easily be incorporated in future client and specification versions,” Tim Beiko stated.

What “The Merger” Does to the Ethereum Network

The Merge removes miners from having any role to play on the Ethereum network. The major upgrade will make validation to be performed by stakers that deposit 32 ETH.

2.3 million testnet ETH have already been deposited on the new network by relatively 72,000 validators, which indicates that the community is significantly ready for the arguably biggest upgrade in the crypto space.

Read Also: Polygon Evolves In Its Quest to Lead Ethereum-Scaling Solution Race with the Latest Acquisition Worth $500 Million

Currently, the real Beacon chain has 8.7 million ETH staked, worth $33 billion, by 272,000 validators. Once the upgrade is fully implemented on the mainnet in 2022 as expected, these validators will be the ones running the Ethereum network instead of miners.

The upgrade is projected to reduce Ethereum’s environmental impact by 99.9% and lower its inflammatory rate from about 4% a year to between 0.2% and 1% a year.

The arguably most anticipated development in the crypto ecosystem currently is Ethereum 2.0, which is the transitioning of the Ethereum network from proof-of-work (PoW) to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithm, and there has been notable progress in this regard since the beginning of the year.

The latest development regarding this is a much-needed approval that makes the path to the PoS era clearer. As a report as it, the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) that has to do with the merging of the two chains in the process of moving the Ethereum network to proof of stake has been formally created.

Read Also: Judging By History, Top Analyst Says Ethereum (ETH) Would Hit $18,000 by July 2022

EIP-3675 Created

On 22nd July, Mikhail Kalinin, a researcher at ConsenSys created a pull request for EIP-3675 on Github. This proposal is targeted at initiating the process of upgrading the Ethereum network from its current protocol to the much-awaited PoS consensus algorithm.

According to the specification found on Github, Etheruem 2.0 Phase 0, which is known as Beacon Chain, has been up and running since December 2020 without any record of failure:

“The beacon chain network has been up and running since December 2020. Neither safety nor liveness failures were detected during this period of time. The long period of running without failures demonstrates sustainability of the beacon chain system and witnesses its readiness to start driving and become a security provider for the Ethereum Mainnet.”

Tim Beiko Confirms EIP-3675 Creation

Tim Beiko, an Ethereum (ETH) core developer, also confirmed the new development via a Twitter post on 22nd July, stressing the significance of the proposal.

Tim Beiko tweeted, “Hard to overstate how valuable’s Mikhail Kalinin’s work on The Merge has been, and it’s finally being formalized in an EIP.”
