In a sharp escalation of tensions within the cryptocurrency sector, Messari founder Ryan Selkis has intensified his criticism of Ripple, warning about its potential impact on the Trump administration’s cryptocurrency initiatives.

The latest development comes amid reports of Ripple’s growing influence and XRP’s significant market performance.

XRP is now bigger than Salesforce and approaching BofA in market cap.

+ Top 30 US company.
+ Twice the value of Uber.
+ Bigger than Shopify, PayPal, and Microstrategy combined.
+ 5x the size of Coinbase.

Ripple’s crash and scandals will take down the entire crypto agenda in DC.

— Ryan Selkis (d/acc) (@twobitidiot) January 16, 2025

Market Valuation Raises Concerns

Selkis expressed serious concerns about XRP’s recent market performance in a post on X on January 16. According to his analysis, while XRP’s market capitalization has reached significant milestones, Ripple might cause its downfall.

Selkis noted that XRP’s valuation exceeded Salesforce and was approaching Bank of America’s market capitalization. Although XRP’s market cap has surpassed Disney’s, current market data indicates XRP’s actual market cap stands at approximately $187.73 billion, notably below Salesforce’s valuation of over $300 billion.

Selkis also emphasized XRP’s substantial market presence. He compared it to several other major corporations. He noted that the cryptocurrency’s current valuation surpasses the combined market capitalization of prominent technology companies including Shopify, PayPal, and MicroStrategy, claiming it has reached five times Coinbase’s value.

Political Implications and Corporate Strategy

Selkis’s criticism coincides with recent developments in Washington, DC, where Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and Ripple CLO Stuart Alderoty met with President-elect Donald Trump.

There are rumors that during this meeting, Garlinghouse proposed expanding Trump’s planned national Bitcoin reserve to incorporate additional cryptocurrencies.

While the Trump transition team has not officially confirmed these discussions, market speculation about potential inclusion has contributed to XRP’s price appreciation, bringing it to $3.39, its highest level since 2018.

Centralization Concerns Intensify

The cryptocurrency community’s concerns about Ripple extend beyond market valuations. Critics, including Selkis, point to fundamental issues regarding the project’s centralization. The primary point of contention centers on Ripple’s substantial holdings of XRP and its significant influence over the network’s development.

We are on twitter, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1

These factors have led some industry observers to question whether Ripple accurately represents the decentralized principles that underpin cryptocurrency technology. However, Ripple CTO David Schwartz has debunked this claim multiple times, explaining how XRP is decentralized.

Personal Motivations Under Scrutiny

In a separate statement explaining his opposition, Selkis criticized Ripple’s leadership, specifically targeting chairman Chris Larsen and CEO Brad Garlinghouse. He suggested their motivations transcend financial success, claiming they “lust for power.”

While Selkis has no problems with XRP holders, he believes Ripple will be the downfall of XRP. However, Garlinghouse has been outspoken about progressing the entire crypto market, and while Ripple’s focus is on XRP, major developments like its victory over the SEC and influence in government set positive precedents for the crypto market and not just XRP.

Ryan Selkis, co-founder of the crypto research firm Messari, has once again launched harsh criticisms against the XRP and Cardano communities, tagging them as “bot groups on X” with little to offer in real-world usage or products.

In a post on Saturday, December 14, Selkis targeted the two prominent Layer 1 blockchain ecosystems, dismissing their relevance and implying that they lack substantial users.

This criticism comes amid longstanding tensions between Selkis and supporters of XRP Ledger and Cardano, which are often the subject of debate in the broader crypto community despite being among the most established Layer 1 networks.

Ripple, XRP, and Controversy

The latest remarks follow backlash that Selkis received earlier on the same day for comments directed at Ripple Chief Legal Officer Stuart Alderoty and the broader XRP community.

Responding to a post featuring Alderoty with former Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Selkis sought to challenge any suggestion of Ripple’s strong connections with Donald Trump’s political network. In his post, Selkis described XRP as “a piece of shit” and referred to Ripple as “the drowning victim of crypto,” further stoking tensions with the blockchain’s supporters.

Selkis’ attacks against XRP are not new. Over the years, he has criticized the network, labeling it a centralized blockchain. He argues that XRP primarily benefits Ripple insiders and has stated that Ripple’s association with political figures, particularly from the Trump administration, poses risks to the broader crypto industry.

We are on twitter, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1

Cardano Excluded from Messari’s Report

Cardano, another target of Selkis’ criticism, has faced similar dismissive comments from the Messari co-founder. The rift between Selkis and the Cardano community intensified in recent months after the network was excluded from Messari’s widely circulated Crypto Theses 2024 report.

This 200-page document, which highlights trends and projects of economic significance, omitted Cardano because it did not meet Messari’s benchmark for economic activity.

The decision drew strong reactions from the Cardano community, which pushed back on Selkis’ claims that the network lacked meaningful utility or user engagement. Critics highlighted recent data to counter his arguments.

For instance, a community note posted on X emphasized that on December 12, Cardano processed over 280,000 transactions—roughly 20% to 60% of the daily transaction volume of Bitcoin and Ethereum—despite having only a fraction of their market capitalization.

Despite Selkis’ repeated criticisms, the XRP Ledger and Cardano remain key players in the Layer 1 blockchain landscape. Supporters of both networks continue to highlight their unique attributes and progress, even as debates around their adoption and value persist.

Selkis’ remarks reflect broader disagreements within the crypto space regarding the purpose, utility, and future of various blockchain projects.

While the Messari co-founder maintains his stance, recent transaction data and network activity suggest that XRP and Cardano are far from inactive, as their communities challenge detractors.

Charles Hoskinson, the CEO of IOG, who created Cardano (ADA), has recently questioned the exclusion of the largest proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain in the top 25 crypto report that was recently released by Messari, a crypto market intelligence firm.

In a series of tweets on the 26th of July 2022, Ryan Selkis, the founder of Messari, announced that the platform has started the production of quarterly reports for 25 of the largest digital currencies in the world.

Ryan Selkis tweeted, “Messari now produces quarterly reporting for 25 of the world’s largest crypto communities. Here are the most interesting charts from the first 15 reports we’ve done on Q2.”

We Are On Twitter: Follow Us

The first 15 crypto reports released by Messari include Ethereum (ETH), Uniswap (UNI), Tezos (XTZ), Polkadot (DOT), Binance Coin (BNB), Avalanche (AVAX), e.t.c.

In a nutshell, the list contains the top smart contract platforms, which are Cardano’s stern competitors. But strangely, Cardano (ADA) is missing from the list.

Read Also: Cardano (ADA) Reaches New Height of Network Uptime: 1760 Days without an Outage

Expectedly, the exclusion of the crypto project raised questions from community members, including IOG boss, Charles Hoskinson.

A supposed Cardano community member who reacted to the exclusion asked:

“Where is Cardano? Disappointed there isn’t a report for Cardano when by every metric it is one of the world’s 25 largest crypto communities. This makes me question the credibility of this report.”

In response to the user’s inquiry, Messari founder wrote, “Stay tuned.”

Where is #Cardano? Disappointed there isn't a report for Cardano when by every metric it is one of the world's 25 largest crypto communities. This makes me question the credibility of this report.

— Session Cruz (@session_cruz) July 26, 2022

Read Also: Charles Hoskinson Reacts to MicroStrategy CEO’s Opinion on Cardano (ADA) Security Status

Charles Hoskinson Reacts

Cardano (ADA) founder, Charles Hoskinson, who is accustomed to questioning anything related to Messari’s action, also reacted to omission.

Hoskinson wrote, “No cardano? Ok….”

No cardano? Ok…. https://t.co/aKwjc6sn8P

— Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) July 27, 2022

In response to Hoskinson’s question, Ryan Selkis, “hey man – we are signed up to work together starting this quarter (Q3). we all missed the window for Q2, but we’re starting this imminently?”

Indeed, the Cardano blockchain has faced tons of criticisms over the years and this strange exclusion by Messari seems to confirm that the blockchain project is being targeted.

However, Hoskinson’s vision for the blockchain project has been unaffected by criticisms, considering the progress of the project from inception. His focus is fully set on ensuring that Cardano attains its full potential and becomes a force to reckon with in the crypto industry.
