Hunter Biden launched his $LAPTOP cryptocurrency token on September 9. Within 30 minutes of launch, it had crashed 90% from its peak. YouTuber Crypto Rover (@cryptorover) reported on X, triggering reactions from many in the crypto space.

The Launch Details

Biden announced $LAPTOP earlier in the week, positioning it as a memecoin tied to his controversial laptop story. The token launched on Coinbase’s Base network. The founding team held 30% of the 1 billion token supply.

Another 20% went to airdrops targeting investors who lost money on Donald Trump’s $TRUMP coin, Biden’s Substack subscribers, and followers of video journalist Andrew Callaghan. The launch generated significant attention, but the price collapsed almost immediately after trading opened.

The token has fallen even further. At press time, it traded at $0.7614, down 99.8% from its peak of over $400.

Crypto Community Reacts

Several prominent voices responded quickly on X. One commenter said the token “speedran the entire shitcoin lifecycle” in 30 minutes, a reference to the typical rise-and-fall pattern of low-quality cryptocurrency launches.

Another took a harder stance. He argued this was not a market crash but deliberate theft, tagging Biden directly in his post. A third commenter directed his post at Senator Elizabeth Warren, arguing that her push to delay the CLARITY Act gave space for exactly this kind of unregulated activity.

One community member offered a detailed response. He argued that political memecoins follow the same pattern every time: starting with hype, then airdrop theater, then insiders sell first. He told buyers they had not been rugged but had paid for a lesson, adding that treating a ticker with a famous last name as an investment rather than a lottery ticket will keep producing the same result.

Ethics Concerns Cut Both Ways

The timing raises a significant question about political consistency. Senate Democrats have aggressively opposed the CLARITY Act, citing ethics concerns around officials profiting from crypto while shaping policy. Their objections helped delay the bill and kept crypto markets operating with limited regulatory oversight.

Meanwhile, Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, launched a memecoin that collapsed within its first half hour of trading. A functioning regulatory structure under the CLARITY Act may have prevented this kind of launch entirely.

The White House struck a deal in late July to include ethics provisions in a new draft of the CLARITY Act. However, critics argued the language did not go far enough. As of now, the bill has not passed.
