Crypto researcher SMQKE recently posted a clip on X that few people have seen. It shows Matthew Mellon, a banking heir and then-global ambassador for Ripple Labs, describing how XRP kept him financially functional during the 2015 Greek banking crisis. Mellon gave the account live on Fox Business, fresh off a Forbes cover appearance.
In the summer of 2015, Greece’s financial system was failing in real time. Banks shut their doors. ATMs across Athens ran out of euros. Capital controls froze the movement of money for millions of people. Tourists on the Greek islands felt it too.
Cards Refused, ATMs Empty
Mellon was vacationing in Mykonos with his family when the crisis reached the beaches. He attempted to pay at a restaurant with his credit card. The restaurant refused it. He then went to an ATM. Every machine he found was out of euros.
He asked whether the restaurant would accept Bitcoin. They told him they would only accept XRP, the digital asset created by Chris Larsen of Ripple Labs.
“Thanks to XRP, Ripple Labs, I was able to pay my restaurant, my taxi and my hotel bill,” Mellon said in the interview.

Mobile Wallets vs. Banks
The interviewer pressed Mellon on what the experience meant for the financial system. His response was clear.
“It’s turning into like the mobile wallets versus banks,” he said. “You control your own money. You don’t need a bank.”
When the anchor suggested this scenario could repeat itself if banks turned insolvent, Mellon agreed without hesitation.
He also described conditions on the island as increasingly tense. The situation at the airport deteriorated as tourists rushed to leave. “It was quite terrifying,” he said. “Even at the airport was turning into a mob scene just to get off the island.” His sympathy extended to Greek residents living through the collapse. “My heart really goes out to the people,” he said.
A Clip Resurfacing Now
The footage predates most public awareness of XRP by several years. Mellon gave the interview at a time when XRP was still largely unknown outside early crypto circles. SMQKE noted that few people had seen the clip before sharing it.
The interview stands as one of the earliest documented examples of XRP functioning as a practical financial tool during a real crisis, recorded on live television by a prominent public figure.
