IOG team is taking the final steps towards the much-anticipated Alonzo mainnet launch, an upgrade to the Cardano network that will activate smart contracts functionality, slated to play out on 12th September 2021.
In a tweet on 31st August, Input Output Global (IOG), the software firm behind the development of Cardano (ADA), updated the community about the major upcoming development that will pave the way for the Alonzo era.
According to the report, in a couple of hours’ time, the Cardano Public Testnet will hardfork into the Alonzo era, which will incorporate smart contracts capability. IOG added that this upcoming development will mark the countdown to the full mainnet deployment of Alonzo.
IOG tweeted, “Tomorrow around UTC 20:20, the Cardano Public Testnet will hardfork into the Alonzo era, adding Plutus smart contracts capability. The start of the countdown to full mainnet deployment & the beginning of an exciting new era for Cardano.”

What Happens After Cardano Public Testnet Hardfork?
Cardano hard fork is coming. In the short video captioned in the update, IOG answered the likely questions in relation to what it means to Cardano as a whole and what happens after the hard fork on 1st September:
“Once we hardfork the [Cardano] testnet, then we can start testing everything inside the package in a live production environment. We will be running our own test and invite other to test as well.
“The main goal is to test for stability, security, testing that the foundation code for smart contracts is working properly, and other miscellaneous things that need to be done to ensure that we can confidently hardfork to the mainnet. This is also the time in which the 140 exchanges will be switching from Alonzo Purple to a live production environment in preparation for the mainnet launch.”
