This Is How Serious the XRP Bug Actually Was

The XRP Ledger carried a critical vulnerability for over a decade before anyone caught it. Crypto Sensei (@Crypt0Senseii) laid out exactly how serious the XRP bug was and what it could have meant for one of the world’s largest crypto networks.

Details of the Exploit

The bug has been inside the XRP Ledger’s payment engine since 2015. An attacker who found it could have manufactured new XRP tokens out of nothing and spent them like any legitimate coin. RippleX tested the attack path themselves and confirmed it worked. What makes the flaw particularly striking is the low cost of execution.

As Crypto Sensei noted, “the attacker did not need a massive amount of money to pull it off.” Hundreds of specially crafted orders placed across multiple accounts were enough to trigger the integer overflow and produce spendable XRP beyond the network’s 100 billion cap.

Fixing the Bug

Security firm Veria Labs found the bug using an AI agent that combed through the software running the XRP Ledger. The AI identified the flaw on September 21, and co-founder Cayden Liao submitted the report the following day. Ripple paid Veria Labs $250,000, the maximum available under its bug bounty program. This is the largest bounty ever paid for a vulnerability discovered entirely by an AI agent.

The disclosure came on October 9, but the patch had already shipped two weeks earlier in an emergency release. Developers held back the full source code temporarily to prevent anyone from weaponizing the information before validators could update. No evidence of exploitation on any live network has emerged.

How the Community Responded

Reactions across the community varied in tone but shared a common thread of concern. One observer questioned why it took 12 years for the flaw to surface, treating the timeline as the real story worth examining.

Another took a more skeptical view of how the story was being handled publicly. He argued the coverage was deliberately designed to shake out retail holders, predicting that the same voices amplifying the fear would later mock those who sold for not understanding what they held.

What Comes Next?

The fix is now active on mainnet. Over 80% of trusted validators applied the patch within a day of the emergency release. XRPL has also committed to retesting reported vulnerabilities against release candidates before any future software goes public, tightening the process that allowed this flaw to go unnoticed for so long. The episode has also renewed attention on AI-assisted security auditing.
