Shiba Inu investors are being warned about a new fraudulent airdrop scheme targeting the SHIB community. Shibarmy Scam Alerts (@susbarium), a community-driven platform dedicated to exposing cryptocurrency scams, issued an alert urging users to be cautious of any promises of free SHIB.
Shibarmy Scam Alerts warned users against connecting their cryptocurrency wallets to any website that claims to facilitate a SHIB airdrop. There are currently no official SHIB airdrops, and linking wallets to fake airdrops could grant unauthorized access to these wallets, resulting in a partial or complete loss of funds.
Airdrops are a legitimate marketing strategy in the cryptocurrency space, where projects distribute free tokens to generate interest and reward early adopters. However, scammers exploit this tactic to trick investors into compromising their wallets.
The Shibarmy Scam Alerts team identified a post on X promoting a fraudulent SHIB airdrop. The post, created by an X user with the username Roberto Colon (@canobori), had been viewed over 34,600 times at press time, showing how far these scams can spread. However, the post has few engagements, with only 4 likes and 8 reposts.
This response shows the need for accounts like Shibarmy Scam Alerts. Shibarmy Scam Alerts warned the community about a different scam in February, and the lack of engagement with the post despite the large number of views shows that the community is aware of these scam tactics.
These scammers leverage social media platforms to spread their deception. The account promoting the scam was established over a decade ago and has accumulated a moderate following.
The Shiba Inu ecosystem team has a history of proactively combating such scams. Last month, the official Shiba Inu Platform X handle issued a similar warning, highlighting the absence of authorized SHIB airdrops and urging users to avoid clicking any links associated with them.
The threat extends beyond SHIB. Scammers have also targeted the broader Shiba Inu ecosystem, launching fake airdrops for BONE, LEASH, and other tokens in the SHIB ecosystem. The Shiba Inu team has consistently issued warnings against these fraudulent activities.
