Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao recently shared an interesting story from his time in prison. CZ, who was released on September 27 after serving a sentence for charges related to regulatory violations, provided insights into his experience during an interview shared on X.
Despite being cut off from the internet and having limited communication with the outside world, CZ encountered a surprising curiosity about cryptocurrencies among the prison guards.
“Actually, I did have a couple of guards recognize me and then ask me like, what coin should I buy?” CZ recounted. This unexpected interaction highlights the widespread appeal of cryptocurrencies and how far the market has spread in just a few years.
CZ noted that he was not in a position to offer investment advice during his imprisonment. “I told them, look, I’m inside. I don’t have any access to information, right? So there’s no internet,” he explained.
CZ’s only connection to the outside world was through brief messages from friends and family, none of which included discussions about cryptocurrency. Without proper information, he couldn’t make informed predictions, as he explained to the guards.

CZ’s Legal Troubles
As the founder of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, CZ has been a prominent figure in the crypto industry for a long time. His legal trouble began in November 2023 when he had to step down from his position at Binance.
The charges against him involved violations of U.S. anti-money-laundering requirements, and he has been banned from holding any executive positions in the company. The settlement also included a $4.3 billion settlement paid by the exchange. CZ was sentenced to four months in prison on April 30.
