Just In: Ripple Payments Set for Implementation in the EU by October 2025

SMQKE recently reported on X that “Ripple Payments [has been] designated as an alternative blockchain payment method, expected to be implemented in the EU by October 2025.” The post quickly drew attention across the fintech and crypto sectors.

Verifying the Claim

SMQKE’s statement is specific. Ripple is already recognized within Europe’s alternative payments market. The industry report Key Players in the EU Payments Landscape: 2025 Edition lists Ripple Payments alongside leading providers such as Revolut, Western Union Payment Services, Skrill, Payoneer, Transfermate, and Moneycorp Technologies.

According to the report, Ripple Payments operates with one employee, earns €2.81 million in revenue, and posts a net income of €0.13 million. This recognition indicates Ripple is viewed as a viable alternative payment solution, despite the absence of a formal regulatory classification or explicit endorsement from EU authorities.

Europe’s Changing Payments Framework

The European Union is undergoing significant payment reforms aimed at modernizing its financial landscape. These changes are designed to enhance security, promote innovation, and improve consumer protection within the EU’s payment services sector. The SEPA Instant Credit Transfer mandate, which requires banks to enable 24/7 euro transfers, will become fully operational by October 2025.

At the same time, the ECB continues to advance its digital euro initiative, while new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations are set to enhance security, prevent fraud, and drive competition.

Deloitte has highlighted these trends, noting that Payment Service Providers (PSPs) are “poised to leverage blockchain technology, the digital euro, and instant payment rails to deliver innovative payment solutions.”

This environment provides fertile ground for blockchain-based networks such as Ripple to expand their role in European payments.

Ripple’s Market Position

Ripple already maintains a strong foothold in Europe through its cross-border payment and liquidity solutions. Its Ripple Payments network is used by banks and fintech companies seeking fast, low-cost international transfers.

Being listed alongside industry leaders such as Revolut—4,534 employees, €1.57 billion in revenue, €271 million in net income—and Western Union Payment Services—280 employees, €506.94 million in revenue, €15.51 million in net income—confirms that Ripple is part of the continent’s core group of alternative payment providers.

Yet, commercial presence is not the same as regulatory approval. A formal EU designation would require explicit confirmation from bodies such as the ECB or the EPC, and no such statement has been issued.

Outlook

The combination of instant payments, the digital euro, and growing blockchain adoption positions Ripple as a credible candidate for deeper EU integration. For now, the most accurate assessment is that Ripple Payments is recognized as a key alternative payment method in Europe’s 2025 market landscape.

However, official EU regulatory confirmation of implementation by October 2025 has not been granted. SMQKE’s report remains a noteworthy lead, and the coming months will determine whether European regulators move toward a formal endorsement.
