Ripple CTO Lauds Elon Musk. Here’s why

David Schwartz, the chief technology officer at Ripple, recently abandoned his criticism of Elon Musk and shared his positive experience with Starlink satellite internet service.

Schwartz detailed how he used Starlink to maintain connectivity while on the road. By simply placing the Starlink dish on the dashboard of his car, he was able to join a Zoom meeting, despite being in an area without cell service.

This practical demonstration of Starlink’s capabilities came after he gained access to the platform’s Roam features, which include coverage for in-motion use, international travel, and remote coastal areas.

Schwartz’s assessment of Starlink has been consistently positive. He has described the satellite service as an “astonishing success.” This stands in contrast to his broader view of Musk, whom he has criticized for overpromising on various projects. According to Schwartz, many of Musk’s initiatives are overrated and do not always live up to the bold claims made by the Tesla CEO.

In his latest remarks, Schwartz mentioned that the internet speed during his Zoom call was around 8 Mbps, which he acknowledged as low by Starlink’s usual standards.

However, he clarified that this was understandable, given that the dish was being used in a situation for which it was not specifically designed. Even with these limitations, he maintains a stable connection, emphasizing the reliability of the technology.

Progress Since its Launch

Starlink has made significant strides since its initial satellite launch in May 2019. Using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets, the company now has close to 6,500 satellites orbiting Earth.

The service currently supports more than 4 million customers worldwide, many of whom live in regions where traditional internet service is unreliable or unavailable. Starlink’s primary focus has been providing satellite-based internet to underserved areas, filling gaps where conventional internet infrastructure is lacking.

In July, Starlink Roam was introduced in the United States, making it possible for users to access satellite internet while traveling. This new feature provides internet access on the move, expanding the service’s usability beyond fixed locations. Earlier this year, Starlink also launched its first cell service, continuing its efforts to diversify its offerings and improve global connectivity.

Conclusion

Despite Schwartz’s reservations about Musk’s broader portfolio, his acknowledgment of Starlink’s performance speaks to the satellite service’s impact on global internet access. With millions of users and ongoing developments, Starlink remains a key player in the future of satellite-based connectivity.
